The Buckhorn Saloon and Museum The Buckhorn Saloon is where it all began—where history was made and legend lives. It is where Teddy The bar features locally brewed beers on draft.

It is where Teddy Roosevelt recruited Rough Riders and Pancho Villa is rumored to have planned the Mexican Revolution. Many of the original furnishings still grace today's Buckhorn Saloon, including the back-bar which was hand-crafted of marble and cherry wood. In our last post, we discussed the fabulous Elizabeth Toepperwein.
Today, we are exploring Ad Toepperwein, the husband of Elizabeth Toepperwein and a renowned marksman worldwide.
Born in Boerne, Texas, Ad Toepperwein fired guns his entire life; however, he did not pursue it as a career until after he quit his job as a cartoonist at the San Antonio Express News.
In the post, you can see some of Ad’s work that he was able to complete, from shooting portraits to hitting 72,491 wooden blocks out of 72,500.
When he met Elizabeth, he taught her sharpshooting, and together they traveled the world as “The Amazing Topperweins.”
Ad and Elizabeth toured the world, showcasing their talents and abilities across the nations.
In 1966, after his death, Ad Toepperwein was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

San Antonians, have you ever driven on Toepperwein Road? Well, Toepperwein Rd. is famously named after Ad Toepperwein and his wife, Elizabeth Toepperwein. Interestingly, their name, Toepperwein, was changed to Topperwein by Wi******er to fit more American standards while using their weapons. Nonetheless, together, they created the “world’s greatest shooting team.”

While Ad Toepperwein was a sharpshooter his entire life, his wife, Elizabeth, only started shooting once they married. However, she was a quick learner and even gained praise from Annie Oakley, who described her as “the greatest shot I’ve ever seen.” In her practice, she coined the term “plinking,” which is now used by shooters across America when they practice with recreational items. Undeniably, Elizabeth Toepperwein paved the way for female sharpshooters, and now Toepperwein Road "shoots" cars onto I-35 daily.
