Sifuentes Metalsmith Jewelry Gallery owned by Master Metalsmith and Artisan, Alejandro Sifuentes.

Equinox Gallery serves as a meeting place to showcase and educate the community by providing a platform for the diversity in the field of metalsmithing. Our exhibition space honors the history of the culture of the southwest and blends traditional and current objects of adornment. Equinox houses the working studio of owner and artist Alejandro Sifuentes and his work is on view year round. The gallery hosts invitational exhibitions throughout the year and is located in La Villita in the heart of downtown San Antonio, Texas.

I went into the studio planning to interview Alejandro about his new work. He was already at the bench, absorbed in setting stones, so I stayed close and let the camera run.

Somewhere between checking a setting and reaching for the next tool, he began talking about the work, then about life, as he often does. The conversation came in fragments, carried by the rhythm of his hands and the piece in front of him. Even after all these years, I never get tired of watching him think through the material in real time.

For a moment, the studio door is open. Come stand beside the bench. Just don’t bump it.

The various colors, shapes, and sizes of this Patagonia Turquoise bead necklace were carefully arranged to tell a story. The earthy color palette of the soft greens and blues, paired with the brown and pyrite inclusions, leave a grounded feeling for the wearer. The necklace is finished off with a sterling silver chain and handmade hook closure. This piece highlights Alejandro’s ability to construct balance from asymmetry.

Introducing Alejandro’s newest series: The Talisman Collection

The inspiration for this collection is History and Lore.
Turquoise, Shell , Coral, and Jade have been used throughout time as adornment and reflect the relationship of culture with nature. They represent the wonders of miracles in time of need and turmoil. As humans our connection with nature and its minerals ignites our love and hope, and helps us recognize our Divine Nature in ourselves and others.

These rings were hand fabricated out of sterling silver and made with the intention of becoming a personal talisman for the wearer. Each stone has a hint of the unknown as they were found objects Alejandro collected over time. They start a new story as they are worn for the modern person.

On this Mother’s Day weekend we are reflecting on the beauty mother nature provides. This South Sea Pearl Necklace is timeless elegance. It features 27 white South Sea Pearls, and if you look closely, there is even a small diamond set in one of the pearls. The handmade box catch is fabricated in platinum, featuring a blue Kyanite stone. Using materials from Mother Earth and transforming them to become wearable art is a gift we are grateful for every day.

This exhibition brings together San Antonio artists who expand craft traditions through textiles, wood, metal, ceramics, and hybrid media—showing how the intelligence of the hand turns making into meaning. Featuring Leo Barrios, Margaret Craig, Casey Galloway, Diana Kersey, Sarah Sauer, Alejandro Sifuentes, the work treats craft as a way of knowing: embodied knowledge built through touch, repetition, and long attention to material.

Rooted in San Antonio’s layered lineage—from early tradespeople and architectural artisans to the legacy of the Southwest School of Art (now UTSA Southwest)—the exhibition also reflects the city’s borderlands identity, shaped by migration and cultural exchange. In a moment of rapid automation and increasingly disembodied production, these works reaffirm the value of presence: objects that carry time, care, and human choice. Moving between utility and contemplation, they position San Antonio as both steward and innovator—a place where heritage and experimentation meet, and where new material languages are being forged.
