What goes into conserving and preserving artwork? 🧐 Learn more about this work + join us on Friday for a lecture by Eddie Jose, the conservator who worked on this work’s restoration!

⏳ Nearly two years
Restoring the screens was a meticulous process that took nearly two years, allowing every detail to be carefully examined and treated using traditional conservation techniques.

⬜ Nine layers of paper
The screens were structurally strengthened with multiple new layers to improve their stability.

💚 Color from the Earth
The artwork’s colors are derived from natural minerals and materials, with greens from malachite, blues from lapis lazuli, whites from oyster shell, and reds from cinnabar and coral.

The exhibition Canvas to Clay highlights two of the most celebrated pottery traditions of the modern Southwest and Northern Mexico: the black‑on‑black vessels created by Maria and Julian Martinez at San Ildefonso Pueblo, and the intricately painted ceramics developed by Juan Quezada in the village of Mata Ortiz.
