Meet the Artist | Chavis Mármol
This fall, we welcome Chavis Mármol as our cohort’s International Artist. Based in Mexico City, Chavis is a self-described “4x4 all-terrain artist.” Chavis’ work assembles, translates, and transplants iconic figures from pop culture, art history, and the collective imagination. Often charged with humor and critique, these gestures let him comment on, disrupt, and provoke within the specific context where he works–Mexico City–on personal, social, and political levels. He works across sculptural techniques and materials (stone, wood, metal, clay, resin, textiles, organic waste, and more), frequently pairing them with performative acts staged in the city’s public space.
His work has appeared in national and international exhibitions, including Fundación Juan March (Madrid and Mallorca), Museo Jumex and Museo Anahuacalli (Mexico City), Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Chile, UNAM’s Bienal de Arte Universitario, the Bienal de Arte Emergente de Monterrey, and the Bienal Internacional de Arte Universitario del Estado de México.
Chavis is currently a member of Mexico’s Sistema Nacional de Creadores del Arte (SNCA) and a recipient of the Premio Gorrita Azul for Artista Promesa. He is also the founder of Todo Woooow, an art and design production workshop where he has collaborated with more than 50 artists, producing work for museums and galleries, including Museo Tamayo, Museo Eco, and Museo Jumex in Mexico City; the Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid; and the New Museum in New York City.
