Happy Earth Day! 🌎

Rebecca Rutstein's sculpture Ridge & Valley was inspired by the Pennsylvania Salient, a distinct feature of dramatic bends and folds found in the Pennsylvania stretch of the Appalachians. Created for The Bower Native Garden & Sculpture Park located in Shermans Dale, Ridge & Valley fits beautifully with the gentle hills, meadow grasses, and forest that surround it. rutstein

We were so thrilled to see Rebecca Rutstein's Blue Dreams video installation exhibited at the United Nations Ocean Decade Conference last week! The Ocean Decade Conference was hosted in Barcelona on April 10-12, in collaboration with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission, Schmidt Ocean Institute and Nautilus Magazine.

Blue Dreams was created in collaboration with The Ocean Memory Project, a transdisciplinary group of researchers across the arts, sciences and humanities exploring the intersection of ocean and memory. To create this installation piece, Rebecca studied data and videos of the microbial networks in the deep sea and abstracted them into stunning abstract arrangements.

The sharp color palette in these three "Black Drawing" paintings will immediately catch your eye and encourage you to take in all the details of Tim's color sense, composition, and mark-making.

Come by and see All Of This Is True, on view through Saturday, May 18!

Did you catch the Eclipse last week? Neil Anderson painted this stunning piece after witnessing the 2017 eclipse that stretched across the contiguous United States. Neil's soft colors and tonality capture the phenomenon beautifully, and we loving having a reason to revisit this painting!

Have you noticed some new shapes in Tim McFarlane's latest body of work? In addition to his signature glyphs, Tim has been experimenting with some geometric, triangular structures in All Of This Is True. He says:

"[These] new works expand on some previous spatial and formal ideas and consist mostly of interlocking triangular configurations. These paintings resonate for me in a particular way where the triangular strata become both structural and tensely independent as they maintain their places within the borders of the paintings. Much like the navigation of social, familial and personal structures within our lives and outwards to the world at large, I’ve attempted to find avenues of liberation and freedom through color, space and light within the hard-edged, geometric arrangements that populate most of my new paintings."

Take a moment to enjoy these stunning fabric sculptures by the talented Holly Wong! Holly says:

"Chrysalis is constructed of transparent, light reflective fabrics shaped around bonsai wire. I began by cutting the cloth into small shapes referencing early American quilt patterns. As I cut the intricate rectangles, squares and triangles, I started to form quilt blocks, sewing them, cutting them up and then sewing them back together again. This felt true to me as my life has been a constant process of mending.

The title Chrysalis references the metamorphous process of the butterfly. From outside appearances, one cannot tell that the butterfly is developing its beautifully patterned wings within the cocoon. Like the
butterfly transforming in the cocoon, I too am secretly growing my wings. They are imperfect and their beauty lies in their imperfection. My wings are becoming stronger and stronger every day and I soon will be
able to fly on my own."

Did you hear that Rebecca Rutstein has embarked on her 8th expedition at sea? For the month of April, Rebecca will serve as an artist-in-residence on the R/V Atlantis to the Guaymas Basin in the Sea of Cortez off the coast of Mexico. She has been invited by a science team led by oceanographer Mandy Joye from the University of Georgia. Rebecca and Mandy have been collaborating since 2018 and this will be their second research cruise together in Mexico. We can't wait to see what incredible art Rebecca creates while on-board!

TONIGHT! Please join us to celebrate Tim McFarlane's new solo show, All Of This Is True! We'll be open with extended hours from 5:00 - 7:30 PM for a First Friday reception at Bridgette Mayer Gallery.

All Of This Is True represents almost two years of exploration and reexamination within the artist’s oeuvre. Tim considers the various identities and dualities that are baked into the human experience, pulling us in different directions and ultimately creating contradiction within ourselves. He invites and even celebrates this contradiction in this new body of work, taking his cue from Walt Whitman’s Song of Myself: “Do I contradict myself? Very well then I contradict myself, (I am large, I contain multitudes.)”

Join us tonight and celebrate this expansive new exhibition!

"Much like the navigation of social, familial and personal structures within our lives and outwards to the world at large, I’ve attempted to find avenues of liberation and freedom through color, space and light within the hard-edged, geometric arrangements that populate most of my new paintings."

Tim McFarlane's newest work continues the conversation on space and composition in new, experimental ways. Drawing on the idea of multiplicity in our identities and relationships, Tim creates portals to abstract, constructed spaces filled with layered depths and intentional composition.

You can see this piece and many more in All Of This Is True, opening on Tuesday!

We are also so excited to welcome Nigel Sense to Bridgette Mayer Gallery!

“Nigel Sense, a Wollongong-born Australian painter, is an artist who creates abstracted portraits and experiences of the many cultures and places he has lived in and travelled to. Travel and discovery as well as a love of culture, music, graffiti, stories, and people inform his loose and idiosyncratic style. There is playfulness and rawness to his work that fits in with my personal curatorial aesthetic and I am thrilled to be the first gallery to exhibit his work in the United States and share it with the American public.” – Bridgette Mayer, Bridgette Mayer Gallery
