Donald Martiny explores the potential of gesture beyond the traditional rectangular support, allowing it to interact with architectural space. Each piece encourages a dialogue between the viewer, the work, and the surrounding space. Existing somewhere between painting and sculpture, Martiny’s work presents a singular brushstroke: a seemingly spontaneous, lavish eruption of color and texture across the wall.

At the core of Abid’s practice are women and the tension between the visible and invisible expectations placed upon them: to nurture, prevail, evolve, and heal, all while navigating restrictions imposed by society or religion. Parenting is another recurring theme, reflecting the challenges of raising and protecting children in a rapidly changing world. Migration is also central to the work. It can be an act of hope and love in search of safety and a better future, but it can also bring separation, uncertainty, danger, and loss.

Throughout the exhibition, familiar objects, clocks, signs, thread, toys, and shoes become metaphors for time and lived experience. Personal acts of knitting, reading, mending, parenting, and protesting intersect with broader realities of migration, displacement, and the search for belonging. Miles to Go Before We Sleep reflects on perseverance, our responsibility to one another, and the work that remains unfinished. There are still miles to go before we sleep.

“Further reinforcing these seemingly dichotomous relationships, a concurrent and parallel line of inquiry investigates ideas of simulacra. Shaped panels are introduced and presented here side-by-side with their rectangular counterparts in pairs. Utilizing similar proportions, as well as the same reduced palettes, these “Doppelgänger” raise questions of authenticity, replication, and illusion, suggesting a perplexing ontological paradox.”

“Two apples (twin targets)” was a part of our past exhibition “Chimera”. At the core of Pater’s practice is an investigation into the quiet value of time, understood as presence, perception, or subtle spaces of distraction within contemporary life, where boredom and attention often blur. Her paintings unfold slowly, both in their making and in their viewing, guided by self-imposed systems that structure an extended meditation on stillness, attention, and the act of seeing. Through recurring motifs such as windows or desks, Pater constructs visual spaces in which clarity is suspended, allowing meaning to emerge gradually through careful and repeated observation.

🗞️ [Space on Space] “What Happens When Objects Gaze Back?”

"On the floating wall that bisects the gallery space, the viewer faces Tempting Eyes, two carved rearview mirrors, showing the eyes of women wearing niqabs. The work references the prior restrictions on Saudi women driving, a ban lifted in 2018. This work gestures to a woman’s position within a patriarchal society; the rearview mirror reflecting a reality beyond the gallery space. Dangling beads, rendered delicately and intimately, are a small decorative element signaling the woman’s individuality.”

“248 Miles (Three Circles)” and “248 Miles (Six Circles)” are sculptural works composed of stacked circles that evoke the form of a traffic light while referencing the Korean symbolism of circles as representations of heaven. The relationship between the two works is expressed through their contrasting sizes, suggesting a parent and child traveling along the same journey.

La Vaughn Belle was invited to participate in an artist residency at Pace University Art Gallery, during which she created a large-scale painting installation. Following the residency, Pace University Art Gallery presented a solo exhibition of her work titled “For the Love of Fragile Things.” Both the residency and exhibition were part of Pace University’s Mellon Foundation-funded project, Islands, Archipelagos, and Cultural Ecologies, an interdisciplinary initiative exploring the connections among the U.S. Virgin Islands, the Marshall Islands, and New York City’s 42 islands.
