This week, we're focusing on Dan Gunn's work in the exhibition “To Be Bound By Place and Lore”.

Dan Gunn’s work explores how Midwestern imagery functions ideologically, serving as a psychological and mythological backdrop for America's self-identity. He aspires to create scenes rich with associations and emotional depth, crafting folk art that reflects the intimacy of the present moment.

This week, we're featuring Raúl Romero's work in “To Be Bound By Place and Lore”.

Raúl's practice explores the intercommunication between people and their environment through sculptural sound installation.

“Beneath the Surface: Transcendental Rhythm in 6/8” explores the transformation of a utilitarian object, such as a Remo drum wrapped in Ghillie, into vessels for sound. The work uncovers their potential for versatility.

“Beneath the Surface: Transcendental Aspiration” installation on view features a four-channel immersive experience where hand-hammered copper forms act as acoustic transducers, producing metallic tonal qualities that shape a unique auditory landscape.

This week, we're presenting Isaac Scott's work in the exhibition “To Be Bound By Place and Lore”.

Isaac Scott’s ceramic sculptures capture the spirit of West Philadelphia, intertwining the history of the city’s Black community and Bartram’s Garden with themes of resilience and unity. Inspired by Tupac Shakur’s "The Rose That Grew from Concrete," Scott seeks to illuminate the challenging realities faced by today's communities, blending urban life with beauty and hope for a brighter future.

We are thrilled to celebrate La Vaughn Belle’s powerful installation, THE HOUSE THAT FREEDOMS BUILT, at the Cooper Hewitt Museum! Her three large-scale sculptures, inspired by Saint Croix’s vernacular architecture, highlight overlooked colonial narratives embedded in material culture. Located on the "Going Home" floor at the main entrance, her work invites visitors to reflect on the resilience and history woven and its impact on our memories, behaviors, and values. Congrats La Vaughn Belle 🎉

This week, we highlight the work of Soyeon Shin in “To Be Bound By Place and Lore”.
Extended gallery hours for Old City Gallery Walk today till 8:00 pm.

Soyeon invites viewers into her unique perspective of her day-to-day life, transforming the ordinary into a surreal reflection of her mental landscape. Her vibrant paintings reveal the beauty of the mundane. Grounded in South Korea's minimalist and industrial styles, she artfully explores the interplay between nature and man-made structures, capturing the essence of her local cityscape.

Thanks to CC. (Contemporary Collage Magazine) for the 16-page feature on Raymond Saá's practice and work in issue #36.
“Born in New Orleans and raised in Miami, Raymond Saá is an American-Cuban artist who creates large-scale collages using sewn-together panels of paper. Built up in layers, Raymond’s work, reminiscent of botanical life, is inspired heavily by his Cuban roots and love of jazz music. Comparisons can be drawn from the build-up of elements in his pieces to the layering of instruments that combine to create a certain mood within his work.”

“Coach’s Playbook”, a series of prints on paper by Brandon J. Donahue-Shipp, juxtaposes basketball playbook diagrams onto courtroom floor plans. Through the layering of these two simple visuals, Donahue-Shipp reminds us of the complex histories that have played out in the American legal system. The prints come in various paper colors in reference to the 20th-century American “Brown Paper Bag Test”.
Now on view through October 12.
