Designed by Georges L’Enfant for Van Cleef & Arpels “Zodiaque medal Piscium” this Pisces Zodiac is part of the original issue of tradition of medals and charms designed offered for Van Cleef & Arpels in the 1950s, weighing 45.2 grams, and measuring 1 5/8 inch diameter
During the Third Republic, the French Parliament decided (tragically) that a major part of the crown jewels were to be sold by public auction between May 12 and 23, 1887. Amongst the jewels offered was a superb pearl and diamond corsage in the style of the 18th century, commissioned by the Empress Eugenie in 1853. At its center shone the splendidly enormous pearl bought by Napoléon I in 1811 from François-Regnault Nitot — a Pearl named ‘La Régente’ at this 1887 sale. This lot (42) sold for 176,000 gold francs to a Mr. Jacques Rossel.
The pearls of the French Crown were considerably enriched thanks to Nitot, initially to satisfy Empress Joséphine, who was very fond of them and who owned several sets, and later to honor Napoleon’s second wife, the Habsburg Archduchess Marie Louise. For their wedding in 1810, Nitot supplied a parure consisting of two necklaces, a comb, strands to wear in the hair, earrings, and bracelets, completed in 1811 with a 408 pearl sautoir and a 297 pearl tiara, in which the pearl later to be known as ‘La Régente’, weighing 346 grains, the largest known pearl in Europe then, the size of a pigeon’s egg, was given pride of place. More on the fate of this pearl tomorrow...

Happy birthday to Queen Charlotte, wife of George III, born on this day in 1744 in Mirow, Germany. Charlotte Sophia of Mecklenburg-Strelitz was German nobility as the youngest daughter of Charles, Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Princess Elizabeth Albertina. Despite her title of princess, Charlotte was raised in a fairly rural duchy, and had limited knowledge of court life.
In 1761, England’s King George III selected her to be his bride. Having succeeded his grandfather’s throne the year before, the 22-year-old king was in need of a wife and heirs, and after surveying a number of options among the Protestant princesses of Europe, he ultimately chose the 17-year-old Charlotte, sight-unseen. George and Charlotte didn’t actually meet until the day of their wedding, on September 8, 1761. The future queen had arrived in London mere hours before.
The couple went on to have 15 children together—9 boys and 6 girls—13 of whom would survive into adulthood. Among their number were the future King George IV, who would spend much of his father’s later life acting as regent, King William IV, and Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, whose daughter, Queen Victoria, would become one of England’s most storied monarchs.

The Empress Dowager Cixi was one of the most famous jadeite and pearl patrons. Her love for jadeites and pearls was intense; be it pearl hairpins that framed her face, or a pair of jadeite pendent earrings, her imperial outfits were dotted with white pearls and lush green jade.
According to the Aiyuexuan Notebook, rumored to be written by the Head Eu**ch of her court, Li Lianying, her imperial death chamber contained a quilt of pearls seven inches thick, two carved jadeite watermelons, two carved jadeite cabbages, a jadeite lotus leaf and four carved jadeite melons, as well as a demon-quelling wand, and the magnificent pair of jadeite bangles. It was believed that the bangles were a gift from Emperor Xianfeng when she was named the Imperial concubine, and she kept these on her wrists for the rest of her life, and brought them eventually with her to the grave.
