Opening April 25:

Barbara Mathes Gallery is pleased to announce Americans in Paris, an exhibition exploring the influence of Paris on generations of 20th century American artists. United by an interest in abstraction, these artists absorbed the lessons of both French Impressionism and the avant-garde. They explored museums and galleries, and established dialogues with French and expatriate artists and writers. As a result of their exposure to the city, they developed their artistic languages in ways that transformed American art.

Exhibition Announcement:
Karen Wilberding Diefenbach
“Pastorale”
April 27 - June 29, 2023

Barbara Mathes Gallery is pleased to present Pastorale, an exhibition of new paintings, works on paper, and sculpture by Karen Wilberding Diefenbach. Inspired by the landscape of Tuscany, Diefenbach’s work is known for its evocation of tradition and its exploration of our complex interaction with the natural world.

Fascinated by what she has called the “determined survival” of the ancient trees in Tuscany and their silent witness to the events of history, Diefenbach has been interested in the cyclical changes of the seasons and the constant transformation of the natural environment. In her new paintings, such as Pastorale (2023) and San Macario #1, Old Olive Tree (2023), Diefenbach’s large scale paintings of vibrant trees reflect this theme of temporality. Unending swirls of bright color form the towering branches of Diefenbach’s trees, conveying the strength and majesty that has endured for hundreds of years.

This exhibition also explores Diefenbach’s ongoing series of works focusing on the Pecore Massese – a unique breed of sheep originating in the Alpi Apuane – that she first encountered in the hills above the town of Camaiore. Diefenbach came to see the Massese sheep’s strange forms as a metaphor for ritual and historical continuity. Seemingly out of time, they graze on the ancient hills as they have for many centuries. Yet in recent years their population has rapidly declined. Diefenbach’s work thus takes on an elegiac tone, and her artistic meditations have come to evoke a place and a way of life that is increasingly under threat.

Opening Tuesday, January 10th:
Barbara Mathes Gallery is pleased to announce Edda Renouf: A Selection of Paintings and Drawings from 1976 – 2019, a comprehensive exhibition spanning more than forty years of the artist’s career. Presenting a wide range of Renouf’s work, this exhibition will explore her commitment to meditative, lyrical abstraction and the experiments with process and material for which she is known.

Fascinated by the physical qualities of linen, Renouf removes and repositions threads from the weave of her canvases before applying glazes of acrylic paint and sanding the paintings’ surfaces. The process of altering the canvas reveals the inherent structure of the support, rendering it not simply a ground onto which an image is imposed, but rather an integral element of the composition itself.

The exhibition will run from January 10th through March 3rd.

Barbara Mathes Gallery is pleased to present "Color Field Painting 60 Years: 1958-2018." Featuring works by Ed Clark, Thomas Downing, Sam Francis, Sam Gilliam, Charles Hinman and Kenneth Noland, the exhibition explores the history of the Color Field movement and its legacy in the 21st Century.

From the 1960s onwards, a generation of American artists began to rethink postwar gestural abstraction. Retaining an interest in color, artists such as Ed Clark, Kenneth Noland, and Thomas Downing began to experiment with framing and shaped canvases, while Sam Gilliam and Charles Hinman abandoned the traditional frame altogether, breaking the boundaries between the space of the painting and the space of the viewer. Driven by technical innovation, the artists presented here expand the definitions of their medium while exploring the effects of light and luminous color.

"Color Field Painting 60 Years: 1958-2018" will be on view at Barbara Mathes Gallery from April 26-July 1, 2022.

Barbara Mathes Gallery is pleased to present Alexander Calder and Fausto Melotti for Frieze Masters 2021. Both artists revolutionized metal sculpture in the 20th century, but their work has rarely been seen together. Although divided by geography, Calder and Melotti shared central aesthetic concerns: they had both trained as engineers and were interested in balance, harmony, and an unorthodox use of materials. Their innovative sculptures, described by Melotti as “drawing in space,” reject traditional solidity in favor of open forms and lyrical motion. In pairing Calder and Melotti, this booth will highlight their common ground – the movement and linearity that defines their oeuvres – while comparing their distinct approaches to abstract metal sculpture.

The gallery will be located at booth B06 and will also present a selection of works by:

Agostino Bonalumi
Manuel Espinosa
Sam Francis
Yayoi Kusama
Joan Mitchell

Frieze Masters will take place October 13-17. For further information and images, please visit www.barbaramathesgallery.com.
