Behind every great exhibition, there is a story.
Dmitry Popov — Chief Curator and Collection Manager of the Nicholas Roerich Museum — trained as a mathematician at Moscow State University. He went on to translate the Brahma Sutra and the Bhagavad Gita from Sanskrit into Russian. He writes and illustrates his own fiction and poetry. And for thirty years, he has been building one of the most comprehensive collections of Native American visual art in existence: more than one hundred works representing every major school, region, and tradition of the continent, from the Northwest Coast to Northern Mexico.
Half of that collection now lives in the Saint Petersburg State Roerich Family Museum — the first such collection in the Eastern Hemisphere. The other half has been housed, quietly, in his Upper West Side apartment.
Primordial America is the first time New York audiences will encounter it in full.

One hundred years ago, the Roerich Museum presented the first major exhibition of Native American painting in a Northeastern cultural institution — and helped launch an artistic movement that would shape generations.

This June, we return to where it began.

PRIMORDIAL AMERICA: In the Art of Nicholas Röerich and Native Painters marks the centennial of that historic moment. Featuring paintings by Roerich alongside works by more than thirty Native artists from six cultural regions of North America, the exhibition also unveils — for the first time — archival photographs from 1925 documenting the encounter that made it all possible.
