Like his Summer Landscape, Chang in this cosmic scene transports viewers to an ethereal realm where traditional Chinese painting techniques meet contemporary abstraction. This work exemplifies Changโ€™s omnidirectional composition, where lines and forms flow seamlessly in all directions, creating a dynamic and immersive experience. The interplay of delicate ink lines with vibrant color washes help to create a dreamlike vision of landscape, where one could recognize earthly brownish mountains and skies blending with celestial hues.

This traditional landscape painting by Chang showcases a majestic mountain bathed in mist dominating the composition, surrounded by smaller peaks and valleys. The use of delicate ink and soft washes of color in pale tones against the textured paper of light blue and warm peach brings a seventeenth-century sense of coloration to the scene. Small, finely detailed trees and ink mosses dot the landscape, adding a sense of scale and depth. Chang places a winding path ascends the mountain, inviting viewers to explore the serene scenery.

Created during the pandemic alongside another smaller painting titled Ink Play, which hangs right next to it in the gallery, this ink landscape by Chang features an exceptionally dynamic landscape composed with his most mature brushwork. A sense of movement and spontaneity is realized through his masterful use of free, flowing, intertwined ink lines and dots. Though no specific topography seems visible, Chang, by adding texture and depth in his most expressive brushwork, suggests the presence of rocky terrain and dense foliage that one can still appreciate and travel within.

๐Ÿ“ข Join us for a special conversation on Chinese paintings and calligraphy in the international market since the 1980s on Sunday, June 16, at 10:30 AM.

Moderated by Fu Qiumeng , the discussion features Arnold Chang .chang and independent scholar Fang Xian . They will share their insights on the art market and the future of contemporary Chinese art.

Arnold Chang, an accomplished artist and pivotal figure, introduced classical and modern Chinese paintings and calligraphy to the international market. Starting at Sothebyโ€™s New York in 1979, he established regular auctions for classical Chinese paintings in NYC, expanded modern Chinese paintings auctions to Hong Kong. Among his notable discoveries are Zhang Daqianโ€™s โ€œGiant Lotus,โ€ the Dingyuanzhai Collection of Zhang Xueliang, and Wu Binโ€™s โ€œTen Views of a Fantastic Rock.โ€ Arnold left Sothebyโ€™s in 1992 as Vice President and head of the department, joining Kaikodo to continue influencing the market.

In 2012, Arnold rejoined Sothebyโ€™s as a consultant when the Chinese Paintings Department in New York was reestablished, working with Fang Xian to secure significant artworks and elevate the market for Chinese painting and calligraphy.

Together with After Lu Zhi of the first rotation, this kaleidoscopic landscape is one of Changโ€™s earliest experiments in transcribing in pencil and then erasing the text of Hua yรผ lu (Enlightening Remarks on Painting) by the greatest seventeenth-century individualist painter Sh*tao (1642-1707). With only faint outlines of the text left on paper, Chang painted the mountains in grand scale with fluttering ink lines and washed them in delicate shades of pale yellowish red, with blackish green trees along the hills and lower valley, evoking an imagined landscape of exuberance and liveliness.

This hanging scroll by Chang features a craggy old tree in the lower right corner, which gracefully evolves into an abstract, sublime form. The tree branches extend and transform, flowing through the air with a cosmic elegance. A subtle waterfall can be discerned in the middle ground, adding a hidden layer of depth to the composition. The colors of the tree are dominated by warm red and orange hues, reminiscent of autumn, while the background is enhanced with transparent blue and delicate ink washes. Other trees, rendered in semi-transparent shades, contribute to the ethereal atmosphere. Chang creates a personal autumn scene that exudes an organic, lively energy, imbued with a dynamic force that captures both the essence of nature and the infinite, as if the sound of autumn is heard throughout the scene.

Exciting News! ๐ŸŒŸ

Fu Qiumeng Fine Art is proud to announce that Zhang Xiaoli โ€™s โ€Box Unlimitedโ€œ (2023) has been acquired by the Mark H. Reece Collection at Wake Forest University , celebrating its 60th anniversary. ๐ŸŽ‰ This student-curated collection welcomes Zhangโ€˜s work alongside seven other artists.

Earlier in 2024, we debuted Zhangโ€™s first solo exhibition in North America, โ€Whimsical Maze.โ€œ The show featured her innovative โ€Boxed Landscapesโ€œ series, blending Chinese aesthetics with Western theories, and introduced โ€Box Unlimited.โ€œ This piece combines playful LEGO elements and literati rocks, echoing the symbolic depth of traditional Chinese paintings with a modern twist of surrealism and shifting perspectives.

Zhang says, โ€I aim to portray the spiritual landscapes of our postmodern world, reflecting ancient traditions through a contemporary lens.โ€œ

Catch โ€Box Unlimitedโ€œ this fall at the Charlotte and Philip Hanes Art Gallery, Wake Forest University. Join us in exploring how Zhangโ€™s art dialogues with historical and modern narratives.

Stay tuned! ๐ŸŽจ

With our current exhibition, โ€The Mountains Show and Hide: Color in the Landscape Paintings of Arnold Chang,โ€œ FQM Fine Art would like to recommend an art book that explores Chinese calligraphy and painting in depth, โ€œC.C. Wang Reflects on Painting: Definition of Brushwork-Oriented Criteria in Chinese Literati Aesthetics.โ€ Authored by Joan Stanley-Baker, a renowned contemporary art historian, this book engages in a novel dialogue with the famous collector, connoisseur, and artist of Chinese painting and calligraphy, C.C. Wang. It delves into the analysis of the illustrious masters and their works throughout the history of Chinese art, exploring deeply various aspects of traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting, especially targeting on the application and appreciation of bimo (brushwork).

Being a student of C.C. Wang, Arnold Chang wrote an article titled โ€Remembering the Master,โ€œ retrospecting his over-twenty-years of joint exploration into Chinese calligraphy and painting with C.C. Wang. C.C. Wang believed that ancient artists had already grasped the quintessence of abstraction in *bimo*, but there were still areas to explore in terms of color application and pictorial composition. Inspired by this, Chang began his decades-long exploration in color. As demonstrated by his works exhibited at Fu Qiumeng Fine Art, he redefined the relationship between lines and color gradations, breaking away from traditional compositions and forms of expression in landscape paintings. His ongoing color experiment reflects not only his own understanding on tradition and contemporaneity but also his continuation of the creative spirit and artistic thoughts of his teacher, C.C. Wang.

In โ€Landscape 2023.11โ€œ, the artist ingeniously uses ink lines and blocks of colors to differentiate the faces of bulbous, multi-faceted mountain forms. The juxtaposition of color patterns combined with the artistโ€™s signature mode of subtle brushwork that resonates with the old masters creates a sense of depth. Upon closer inspection, one finds dynamic interaction of ink lines and color washes in forming the mountains. With the foreground, middle-ground, and background partly segmented by the waterfalls, the audience is invited into a trek across uncertainty, excitement, and meditation amid the landscape. Similar to Landscape 2023.02, subtle touches in red, orange, and green are applied to describe the foliage.

With its clearly discernible lines, ใ€ŒLandscape ใ€2018.05 stands as a testament to Chang's mastery of brushwork. Complemented by its composition, the painting presents an aesthetic reminiscent of traditional landscape paintings. Yet, it also reveals Changโ€™s early experimentation with the interplay of color. He infuses the landscape with his distinctive purplish-blue hues, while touches of orange, green, and ink denote trees scattered throughout the landscape. These delightful colors subtly invite the viewer's gaze to explore the scenery, rendering the painting "Walkable, gaze-able, roam-able, livableโ€ (kexing, kewang, keyou, keju ๅฏ่กŒใ€ๅฏๆœ›ใ€ๅฏ้Šใ€ๅฏๅฑ…).

Following the vibrant tones, the audience is invited into a trek across visual excitement and nuanced emotions. While the landscape's monumental essence is in keeping with the compositional practices of the old masters, it is the abstract qualities and expressiveness of color and line that captivate the viewer, contributing to the overall immersive experience.

In this winter scene, Chang displays a meticulous blend of ink detail and subtle color application. Echoing the compositional elements of Summer Mountains, a celebrated handscroll attributed to Qu Ding (ca. 1050), the scene is anchored by a cluster of massive boulders that recede into the distance along the right. The snowy whiteness is set off by expanses of water rendered in a light blue wash and the blackish-green silhouettes of pine trees. The artistโ€™s detailed application of ink washes and color endows the landscape with a tangible presence, deftly countering the dominant whiteness.

In this delightful landscape, the artist fully explores different possibilities in which color washes and ink lines work in tandem while retaining a sense of independence from each other. Lines serve as borders, delineating blocks of color that differentiate the multi-faced mountain forms. Alternatively, they sometimes recede beneath transparent color washes, unifying the diverse landscape elements into an organic whole. This unexpected combination of an expanded color palette with ink lines results in a new kind of vibrancy and visual resonance.

In this majestic monochromatic mountain panorama, Chang exhibits his supreme skill in 'bimo' (traditional Chinese brush and ink). The scene is ethereal, with monumental mountains bathed in mist, massive boulders interrupted by picturesque waterfalls, and assorted trees that embellish the rocky terrain. All elements of the landscapeโ€”forms, motifs, and idiomsโ€”are artfully woven together, demonstrating a great synthesis of time-honored brushwork principles Chang has practiced for decades and his deep engagement with the art historical legacy of past literati masters.

This ethereal landscape emerges from the artistโ€™s ongoing exploration of the interplay of colorย ย washes and ink lines. The diagonally ranged rock forms are arranged across the hanging scroll into a powerful twist, reminiscent of the โ€œdragon veinโ€ (*longmai*) as described by Wang Yuanqi (1642-1715). Layered color washes in transparent blue and purple are countered by wet ink dots, nuanced texture, and elegantly fluttering ink lines that make up the mountain outlines, creating a new sense of freedom that departs from Changโ€™s earlier, more realistic landscapes.

This freely imagined vision of garden rocks demonstrates the looseness and exuberance of Changโ€™s color and line. He first transcribed in pencil a paragraph of Hua yรผ lu (Enlightening Remarks on Painting) by the greatest seventeenth-century individualist painter Sh*tao (1642-1707) and erased all but only faint outlines of the text. Over these ghostly traces, he painted the rocks and the stalactite grotto with fluttering ink lines and washed them in delicate shades of pale purple and blue, evoking and transforming the Jade Field by the mid-Ming painter Lu Zhi (1496-1576) into a geological wonder.

With sincere appreciation, we extend our gratitude to all who graced our new exhibition opening last night!

Marking artist Arnold Chang .chang โ€™s first solo exhibition in New York since 1996, โ€œThe Mountains Show and Hide: Color in the Landscape Paintings of Arnold Changโ€ unveils Changโ€™s landscape paintings of the past ten years. Through his exquisite blending of flat color washes and ink lines, Chang endeavors to redefine Chinese traditional landscape painting in the contemporary context while conjuring a dream-like milieu. โ€œMany contemporary ink painters use ink as if it is watercolor, I try to use watercolor as if it is ink! Itโ€™s like we are viewing an ink landscape through a prism โ€“ refracting the ink tones into a spectrum of color, โ€ said Chang.

And the curator of this exhibition Joy Chen will be in attendance on April 26th and 27th. We eagerly anticipate your presence!

โ€In Changโ€˜s landscape paintings, mountains are simultaneously visible when ink lines and color washes represent landscapes, and invisible when color and line are used to emphasize formal qualities in their own right.
