🏛️ Museum Highlights | C. C. Wang, Wang Fangyu & Wang Mansheng at China Institute

FQM is pleased to share China Institute Gallery at 60, 1966–2026: Selections from Three Millennia of Chinese Art, celebrating the Gallery’s 60th anniversary and China Institute’s centennial.

Featuring 90 works spanning from 3000 BCE to the 21st century, the exhibition brings together loans from more than 30 institutions and private collections, including paintings, calligraphy, Buddhist sculpture, ceramics, bronzes, jade, and scholars’ objects. Together, these works reflect the breadth and evolution of Chinese art while revisiting the Gallery’s six decades of presenting and interpreting Chinese art in New York.

Among the works on view are those by FQM artists C. C. Wang (1907–2003), Wang Fangyu (1913–1997), and Wang Mansheng (b. 1962), highlighting the inheritance and transformation of Chinese artistic traditions within New York’s Chinese diaspora.

📢FQM is pleased to share that artist Brandon Sadler Brandon Sadler will present DIFFUSION_2 on October 3 at SITE 2026 at The Goat Farm Arts Center Goat Farm in Atlanta, in collaboration with musician Rocko Walker.

Drawing from his Single Word Character System, which merges the English alphabet with Chinese calligraphic traditions, Sadler will create a monumental 36 × 20 ft calligraphic work using a fire extinguisher filled with enamel paint.

The performance continues Sadler’s exploration of calligraphy through movement, materiality, and cross-cultural expression.

FQM is pleased to share The Arts of Community: The Wang Fangyu Collection of Asian Art, now on view at the Walsh Gallery at Seton Hall University through December 11, 2026.

A master of modern Chinese calligraphy, Wang Fangyu (1913–1997) expanded traditional calligraphic practice into a distinctly modern visual language. He was also a distinguished scholar and collector of Chinese art, particularly known for his study of the Qing-dynasty master Bada Shanren (1626–1705).

As professor and chair of Asian Studies at Seton Hall University from 1965 to 1978, Wang played an important role in building the university’s Asian art collection. Featuring more than 20 works drawn from a collection of over 300 objects, the exhibition explores his legacy through paintings, ceramics, artifacts, and his own calligraphy.

As part of the exhibition programming, Fu Qiumeng Qiumeng Fu , Founder and Director of FQM, will give a lecture on November 4, from 5:30–6:30 PM, placing the works within the broader context of Chinese painting and revisiting FQM’s 2020 documentary exhibition on Wang Fangyu’s connoisseurship and research on Bada Shanren.

🌺 𝗨𝗽𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗘𝘅𝗵𝗶𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 🌼

How do Chinese ink artists learn how to paint? In FQM’s AWNY exhibition for this fall, 𝘼 𝙒𝙚𝙡𝙡 𝙤𝙛 𝙍𝙤𝙪𝙜𝙚, 𝙖 𝙁𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙩𝙪𝙣𝙚: 𝙏𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙇𝙚𝙖𝙧𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣 𝘾𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙁𝙡𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧 𝙋𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜, we reconstruct a classroom through textual and material references given by the artworks to revive the traditional Chinese way of passing down artistic knowledge through generations. In a wide range of drawings and paintings, we present the 课 (lesson) and 谱 (lineage) that tie generations of artists together.

The exhibition centers on the flower paintings of Li Fenggong (1884-1967), a painter and an educator, who followed the traditional way of pedagogy through teacher’s demonstration, apprentice’s studies, and teacher’s annotation. Li and fellow apprentices’ lineage can be traced to the Changzhou School and Yangzhou School developed around the first half of the 18th century, and later passed and evolved to the Lingnan School of Li’s based Canton region in early 20th century.
