We are saddened by the passing of Dr. Gilberto Cardenas on July 26 at 79 in Austin, Texas. Our sincere condolences to his wife Dolores Carrilo and all his friends and loved ones.. RIP.

Dr. Gilberto Cárdenas was an internationally recognized sociologist, arts advocate, and institutional builder whose work has transformed the landscape of Latino scholarship and cultural advocacy in the United States.

Dr. Cárdenas was leading force in building Latino cultural infrastructure. He founded Galería Sin Fronteras, a landmark gallery in Austin, Texas, and assembled the world’s largest private collection of Latino art. He played a central role in the creation of the Smithsonian Latino Center (1998), and served as Chair of its Board. Throughout his life, he has opened institutional doors for Latino and Chicano artists and expanded their presence in major collections and exhibitions.

Once again, the beautiful East Los Angeles Library and the Chicano Resource Center opened their doors for the fifth edition of the "Conversatorios de las Artes" (Arts Conversations) series, featuring Margaret Garcia—a renowned Chicano artist who shared the challenges she has faced in life, both as a human being and in her artistic career.

Una vez más, la hermosa Biblioteca de East Los Angeles y el Chicano Resource Center abrieron sus puertas para la quinta edición de la serie "Conversatorios de las Artes", que contó con la participación de Margaret Garcia, una reconocida artista chicana que compartió los desafíos que ha enfrentado en la vida, tanto como ser humano como en su trayectoria artística.

"Gabriel Vargas, Más Allá de los Burrón", fue un evento sin precedentes, realizado gracias a los auspicios y colaboración de la East Los Angeles Library, que contó con la presencia del Embajador Carlos González Gutiérrez, Cónsul General de México en Los Angeles.
