We are saddened by the passing of Dr. Gilberto Cardenas on July 26 at 79 in Austin, Texas. Our sincere condolences to his wife Dolores Carrilo and all his friends and loved ones.. RIP.
Dr. Gilberto Cárdenas was an internationally recognized sociologist, arts advocate, and institutional builder whose work has transformed the landscape of Latino scholarship and cultural advocacy in the United States.
Dr. Cárdenas was leading force in building Latino cultural infrastructure. He founded Galería Sin Fronteras, a landmark gallery in Austin, Texas, and assembled the world’s largest private collection of Latino art. He played a central role in the creation of the Smithsonian Latino Center (1998), and served as Chair of its Board. Throughout his life, he has opened institutional doors for Latino and Chicano artists and expanded their presence in major collections and exhibitions.
