On May 30, 1969, Mario Andretti made history by winning the Indy 500 after leading a remarkable 116 laps of the race🏆. Andretti is one of only three drivers in history to win races in Formula One, IndyCar, the World Sportscar Championship, and NASCAR! 🏎️✨

If you’re a fan of this racing icon, be sure to check out the suit he wore during his victorious 1974 Monza race in Italy, where he triumphed for Alfa Romeo. It’s on display in our permanent exhibition, offering a glimpse into the legacy of this motorsport legend. 🏁

Happy National Wine Day from the IAMLA! 🍷

This photograph from our permanent collection captures members of the Romano family and friends enjoying homemade wine in Lincoln Heights, one of Los Angeles’ predominantly Italian neighborhoods during the early 20th century. Circa 1920s.

For many Italian immigrant families, winemaking was more than a tradition — it was a way to preserve culture, celebrate community, and bring generations together around the table.

Salute!

This Memorial Day, the IAMLA honors the men and women who served our country and made the ultimate sacrifice.

Pictured here from our permanent collection is Joe Romano in his U.S. Navy uniform. After serving in World War II, Joe returned home but sadly passed away in 1945 due to an injury he sustained during the war.

Did you know that the longest mustache ever recorded was 14 feet long, grown by Ram Singh Chauhan of India?

While Tony Bonura, pictured here in this photo from our permanent collection, did not have a mustache quite so long, we still think it is rather magnificent!

Tony’s family hailed from Sicily and lived in what was then LA’s largest Italian enclave, Lincoln Heights.

What do you think of his mustache? Let us know in the comments below!

On May 11, 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi landed in Marsala with a band of 1,000 daring men—the famous Red Shirts, named for their uniforms.

From doctors to workers, this eclectic group, many from struggling towns in Lombardy, set sail from Genoa to fight for the freedom of Sicily, in the name of King Victor Emmanuel of Sardinia-Piedmont. 👑

Their victory ignited the Risorgimento, uniting Italy and triggering a wave of emigration as millions of Southern Italians sought new lives across the globe. 🌍

The IAMLA was honored to welcome a distinguished guest: H.E. Mario Peronaci, Ambassador of Italy to the United States, who visited the museum as part of his official trip to California.

Ambassador Peronaci was joined by representatives of the Italian diplomatic and cultural community, including Consul General of Italy Raffaella Valentini; Consul Lorenza Errighi; Director of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura Los Angeles Emanuele Amendola; as well as Deputy Los Angeles Mayor Jacqueline Hamilton and El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument Assistant General Manager Darrell Alatorre.

Guided by IAMLA Director and Co-Founder Marianna Gatto, the delegation toured the museum’s award-winning permanent exhibition along with its original temporary exhibition, Creative Minds: Italian American Inventors and Innovators. The group also visited several sites at El Pueblo—the birthplace of the city of Los Angeles—which hold deep historical significance for the Italian American community.

It was at El Pueblo that the city’s first Italian, Giovanni Leandri, settled in 1827. The Plaza area and Olvera Street—originally known as Calle Vino—were once home to a vibrant Italian American community.

The IAMLA appreciates Ambassador Peronaci’s visit, which highlighted the enduring cultural and historical ties between Italy and Los Angeles and the importance of preserving and sharing the Italian American story while strengthening connections through heritage, education, and community engagement.
