This workshop is for anyone familiar with the fundamentals of synthesis who’s ready to dig a little deeper.

We’ll explore oscillator sync, pulse width modulation, noise, filter envelopes, ring modulation, and cross modulation, with hands-on access to some amazing vintage analog synthesizers.

No advanced keyboard skills required. Just curiosity and a little familiarity with synthesis.

Join us this Saturday, October 17, at the Vintage Synthesizer Museum in Los Angeles for Hands-On Synthesis II: Modulation, Motion & Texture.

This workshop builds on the fundamentals of subtractive synthesis, exploring techniques for creating more complex, expressive, and evolving sounds.

We’ll explore:

〰️ Pulse width modulation (PWM)
〰️ Noise and sound shaping
〰️ Filter envelopes
〰️ Ring modulation
〰️ Cross modulation

Get hands-on experience with an incredible collection of vintage analog synthesizers, exploring how these techniques work and how to use them creatively.

Designed for people who already understand the basics of oscillators, filters, envelopes, and modulation. You don’t need to be an expert, but some familiarity with synthesizers is recommended.

Yesterday Alex Pelly performed a 90-minute Synthesizer Sound Bath at the Vintage Synthesizer Museum, using around 30 of the 70–80 synths in the museum.

Sometimes when we post Sound Bath videos, people see a computer and comment that there’s audio being played back from it. There isn’t. Everything you hear is being generated live, in real time, by the synthesizers in the room.

Yesterday we actually had two computers running Ableton Live. One was playing back MIDI that Alex had composed, which was being sent wirelessly to synths throughout the museum, telling the actual instruments what to play. The other computer was recording the 12 channels of audio coming from our six mixers. There was no prerecorded audio playback from either computer.

The museum is divided into six sections, each with its own mixer and pair of speakers, plus an additional pair that we can route any of those mixers through. That’s 14 speakers distributed around the room. Because different synths are coming from different parts of the room, the space itself becomes part of the composition, with sounds moving from section to section or playing against each other from opposite sides of the room.

More than half of the synths Alex used were controlled wirelessly from Ableton via Bluetooth MIDI, while she also played and manipulated other instruments directly, along with sequences and arpeggios running from some of the synths themselves.

Alex spent the week leading up to the Sound Bath in residence at VSM, composing the entire 90-minute piece specifically for this setup and this space.

One year ago: The Egyptian Lover and Brian Ellis recording session at the Vintage Synthesizer Museum studio.

For this session we brought out an extra TR-808 and synced the two 808s together, with each one triggering three different synthesizers. Six synths being sequenced between the two machines!

A pretty wild setup, and a very fun day at VSM.

Alex Pelly is a video and sound artist who has been deeply rooted in the Los Angeles music and art scene for most of her life, though she is originally from Canada. She came up through the dublab community, where she has hosted her monthly audio-visual radio show, PELLYVISION, since 2016.
Pelly began creating her own sounds in 2020. Using audio and video synthesizers, she has since performed and recorded compositions and improvisations, combining sonic and optic mediums. In addition to numerous solo appearances under her own name, she has also performed as Split Static, a duo with Elaine Carey, and OX, a duo with Co, an experimental guitar player. OX released “Jupiter”, an audio-visual EP, on Simballrec in 2022.
