Join us ✨this Friday night✨ for the book release party for our very own Resident Studio Artist Anika Toro!

The celebration will take place in the community printshop during our opening house event on Friday April 17th from 6-9pm. The evening will be filled with poetry-forward works with the exhibition of Nurturing Nature by Ty Murray & Jazmin Witherspoon in the gallery, spoken poetry readings by Jazmin, and this book launch!

Anika will be present to chat and sign any books with one-of-a-kind hand-printed material items available with any book sold. Visitors will also be encouraged to participate in a fun found text/play with words experience in the printshop that lines with the book’s theme.

Anika Toro is a mixed media artist with a background in photography and collage. Her current work fuses narrative, serendipity, and playful experimentation into art that transforms familiar texts and images into unexpected expressions of creativity.

“Finding Joy: This mixed media art book takes selections from nine different copies of the same book, showcasing Anika’s transformative and playful approach to the original text. Each page spread uses hand-selected text, left unaltered from its original position. Through a process of erasure and blackout, Anika redacts everything except a newly found message, thought, idea, or poem, without adding any new text. Analog collages, paint, photography, embroidery, and more celebrate unique narratives, exploring creativity, spontaneity, and the profound moments that emerge from reimagining existing ideas.”

See you Friday!!

!THIS FRIDAY! Join us for the opening reception of Nurturing Nature, a photo-poetry collaboration that explores Black femme identity, nature, and belonging in Appalachia. Featuring a series of ekphrastic broadsides by Jazmin Witherspoon in conversation with Ty Murray’s gorgeous depictions of Black women cast as Appalachia’s most iconic animals showing that Black bodies aren’t simply passing through this landscape, but grounded within it.

The event will feature music by Ty inspired by the series and a poetry reading of the featured pieces by Jazmin. Happening Friday 4/17 from 6-9pm

PLUS

Anika Toro will be hosting her poetry book release party for "Finding Joy" in the community printshop. One-of-a-kind hand-printed material items are available with any book sold, each made by Anika. This is the last week to see Reasonable Doubts by Guen Montgomery!

DM us here or email [email protected] to arrange a visit before April 1st.

About the gallery exhibition:

This exhibition of recent works by Guen Montgomery privileges feeling and touching: feeling as an affectual state, the haptic need to feel as orientation, and as “feeling your way through” – a way of navigating in unsettled times. Touch refers to the touch of ink to paper, or the longing to touch that comes from seeing an animal’s fur and feeling it resonate with some uncontrollable mammal part of you. Reasonable Doubts is about being a person-animal-mother in the current polycrisis.

From Guen Montgomery:
“My work tells stories about the absurdity of gendered personhood in the material world. In installations I unite monotype collagraphs with sculpture, performance and object-making, using fabricated, everyday objects as supports and counterbalances for printed ephemera. I print from family heirlooms like house dresses and slips to suggest hyper-femme archetypal characters influenced by Betty and Veronica comics, my Appalachian granny, and my power-suit clad 80’s super-mom.

In the series Crawl Space, I suggest narratives through sewn & printed furry pelts and animal-creatures who are trying to navigate what it means to be an organic mammal-person afloat in oceans of possessions and constructed environments. My engagement with material culture stems from my family’s fraught relationship to things: all is coveted, collected, hoarded, and hidden away.

Rooted in rural Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau, I see my family’s relationship to the material world as something culturally deeper than generational poverty. I understand my mother, aunts, and uncles through their relationship to their things and understand my things through my family’s culture. Ultimately, I fear our stuff is more real than we are.”

See you TONIGHT!
