While waiting for the in tonight, in the Archives, we found a fun photograph of a mid-1910's snow-covered Hinsdale!

A caption labeled "From Marie" on the back of the photograph reads: "Many an early morning in winter we would be awakened by a rumbling sound and shouts of 'Gee' or 'Haw!', and would look out the window to see a blanket of fresh snow and the snow plow going by. The rig consisted of a man, a horse and a wedge-shaped wooden plow just the width of the sidewalks. In those days the walks were always plowed before the streets because people walked to the trains and children walked to school - as a matter of course!"

While Hinsdale's streets and sidewalks are no longer plowed with horse-drawn snowplows, some of the original and historic that horses once plowed in Hinsdale still exist on First Street, Sixth Street, and Park!

Fall is in the air! Are you or your kids carving a jack o'lantern this year? Here's a Hinsdalean from 1965 trying his best to carve a spooky face!

This photograph is one of the thousands that the Historical Society is attempting to preserve from the 1960s-1970s. The photographer who took this photo worked for The Doings for many years and donated many boxes of negatives, prints, and film to the Society a few years ago.

Monday is Indigenous Peoples’ Day and Columbus Day! Let’s glance into Hinsdale’s native history with this early map of Fullersburg!

The Indigenous people who have called this land home for thousands of years have had a big impact on the development of . This map details the locations of the settlements of the early pioneers, including Jacob Fuller and the Thurston, Coe, Torode, and other early families in the area. But, it also shows us the “Old Indian Trail,” which eventually became Ogden Avenue and an “Indian Camp” is clearly seen to the West of what evolved into Fullersburg.

In oral histories and written autobiographies in our Archives, early residents of Hinsdale remembered having strong and friendly relationships with the Native Americans in this area, recalling how they would come to town to do their weekly shopping and their children would play with the pioneers’ children.

Our Story

Since 1975, the Hinsdale Historical Society has been THE home of Hinsdale’s history. With its mission to bridge the past, present and future by engaging the community with its history and architecture, the Society is devoted to collecting, preserving, and promoting the history of Hinsdale. Besides housing archives and collections containing a multitude of photos, oral histories, documents and artifacts that share the story of Hinsdale, the Hinsdale Historical Society has preserved and is maintaining three historic properties in the Village. The Hinsdale History Museum, the R. Harold Zook Home and Studio, and Immanuel Hall each hold significant stories to Hinsdale's unique past. The preservation of these three properties, the operation of the Roger and Ruth Anderson Architecture Center, as well as the extensive archival treasures that the Society cares for are evidence of the dedication and commitment the Society brings to Hinsdale history. The Hinsdale Historical Society is a nonprofit organization that relies on private donations to meet its mission. Through the generous support of its supporters, the Society works to foster an awareness and appreciation of Hinsdale’s history.
