Many Masks, One Story: Adnate Explores Identity in Aalborg

Painting in the centre of Figueiró dos Vinhos felt different. There was a particular responsibility in painting a house that belongs to the centre of an older town, where people have lived for decades, becoming accustomed to the same walls, windows, doors and architectural details. I felt a lot of pressure to create something that could coexist with this existing environment without shocking or disrupting it.

I wanted to keep the place as it was, because in my opinion it was already beautiful, while highlighting what was already there. The façade I painted was already filled with architectural elements, including windows and doors, so my idea for this project was to explore and accentuate the concept of invisibility, something I feel is a common characteristic of many Portuguese old town centres.

Many of these houses and architectural elements have become abandoned, overlooked and forgotten. I wanted to play with this sense of invisibility by camouflaging the existing elements of the house with new elements inspired by the surrounding architecture. In a way, the goal was to use invisibility to make the house more visible: to highlight the building itself while, at the same time, drawing attention to the architectural elements that belong to the neighbourhood.

I hope this work can, in some way, bring attention to these houses and details that are so easily overlooked. Most of all, I hope that the local community can relate to the painting, embrace it and, ultimately, feel proud, seen and represented by it.

Today, from among the ruins of destroyed homes, we created this mural as a message of thanks and appreciation to Dan, hoping it reaches him and people around the world.

From the heart of our suffering, we want to say to everyone who hears Gaza and stands beside its people: We see you, we hear you, and we will never forget your support.
