"The Patience of Ordinary Things"
Pat Schneider, 1934 –2020
It is a kind of love, is it not?
How the cup holds the tea,
How the chair stands sturdy and foursquare,
How the floor receives the bottoms of shoes
Or toes. How soles of feet know
Where they’re supposed to be.
I’ve been thinking about the patience
Of ordinary things, how clothes
Wait respectfully in closets
And soap dries quietly in the dish,
And towels drink the wet
From the skin of the back.
And the lovely repetition of stairs.
And what is more generous than a window?

There is a certain beauty in everyday machinations of ordinary life. The daily dance we fill our lives with. Every now and again we get the blessing of stopping and realizing how miraculous life is, how incredible it is that we exist. Bill Aron has made a name for himself capturing these everyday moments, these miracles of existence, in photographs. Whether panoramic landscapes stitched together from multiple shots to intimate documentation of individuals in his community, Bill Aron shows the world of the ordinary and mundane for the treasure it is.

One of Chinese sculptor and ceramicist Li Hongwei’s signature forms, the series of works titled “Dan” not only exemplifies the artist’s creativity and range of ideas, but also refers to a clever equivoque. In Chinese, the word “Dan” (旦) translates to mean several things, one of them being egg. It can also mean “morning,” “dawn,” and “daybreak” - all words referencing some kind of beginning or fresh start. The concept of a new beginning also relates back to the word “egg,” which symbolizes a new beginning in life.

Landscapes are not typically known for their sense of motion. A landscape painting or drawing generally forms a sort of snapshot, with every aspect frozen in time. This is not the case for the beautifully dynamic pastels of Mallory Lake. Every piece of work by Mallory Lake has a sense of vitality and motion that breathes throughout the piece and flows with every mark and line. This sense of movement is particularly captured in "The 7:45," a portrait of a train passing by the viewer. The soft edges and atmospheric quality typical of Lake’s work gives this simple subject an exhilarating sense of motion and excitement. One can feel the wind of the train rushing past and hear the loud rumble of the tracks. This effect is created by the dynamic and fluid mark making that is typical of Lake’s work. The deep contrast of the shaded ground and tracks against the train and sky, lit by the soft morning light, gives an added sense of allure to a simple and mundane scene.

Renowned for her carefully stenciled patterns, appreciation and study of Eastern pottery techniques, and successful career in France, Fance Franck remained dedicated to her craft until her death in 2008. The work pictured, a “rectangular vase” exemplifies her signature use of stencils and simplified geometric forms. Here, Franck’s iconic celadon glaze serves as the vase’s base, which she then stencils over with grey and green glazes. The result is a cohesive palette of cool tones ranging in opacity and thus resulting in stunning gradients.

Color symbolism is a foundational aspect of interpreting art. Across time and across cultures, different colors have different traditional meanings. Red is associated with passion and anger, but also sometimes good luck. Blue commonly evokes serenity or divinity but can also be indicative of sorrow. Green brings nature and new life to mind but can also conjure up visions of sickness and rot.

Roz Karol Ablow is an expert at the use of color to create an atmosphere in her work. Her highly abstract collages are rich with vivid colors that paint a scene for the viewer without the need of high representationally. "Vases with Pitcher and Flowers" is an excellent example of Ablow’s ability to use color to create clarity of form without relying on exact representation. "Vases with Pitcher and Flowers" is largely constructed of deep, muted shapes, mostly in dark purple. The purple creates a solemn and regal atmosphere, perfectly capturing the look of a still life seeped in the plum tones of late twilight. A single sliver of pale-yellow serves as a brilliant focal point, throwing a thin beam of light on the vase. The inclusion of the yellow not only adds visual interest, but in a single addition creates remarkable depth and clarity of composition.
