Happy Sunday 🌞 The Pick of the Week is Pat Keck's "Small Drummer #2." In the catalogue for Keck's 2020 Pucker Gallery exhibition "Hide 'N Seek" Bernie Pucker writes, "How best to think about the astonishing art created meticulously by Pat Keck? How to describe why we are attracted to her art? Authenticity is the word that comes to mind. There is no attempt to surprise or shock or preach. Each work simply (or not so simply) appears in Pat's imagination and calls to her to be born. She carefully amasses and crafts every element—from tiny screws to handsewn costumes, a collection of watches to strange hairdos. All are a piece of the intricate creating of each unique sculpture. There is no compromise as her vision is exactingly made. Then, we are astonished when the work appears. There is a magical aspect to the completed work that belies the technical aspects of its making. We can only applaud quietly when confronted with the absolute discovery of each new Pat Keck creation. We await with excitement for the next surprise, lingering around the bend. Thank you to the wizard of our imagination, Pat Keck." 🔮

Born in 1894 in Kawasaki, Japan, Shoji Hamada is arguably one of the most influential potters of a generation. After studying ceramics at Tokyo Technical College, he was deeply inspired by English potter Bernard Leach, who he met at an exhibition of Leach’s work. From 1920 to 1923, Hamada travelled extensively to learn about diverse ceramic and folk craft traditions and built a climbing kiln in England at St Ives with Bernard Leach. Hamada returned to Japan, where he set up his own kiln in Mashiko. Dedicated to the traditional process, Hamada not only built his own kiln, he also committed to using only local ingredients for his clay and glazes, as well as making all his own brushes by hand. This remarkable dedication to craftsmanship, his support of younger potters, and his stunningly elegant works eventually led him to be designated a “Living National Treasure” in 1955. His work has inspired many other famous potters, such as Tatsuzo Shimaoka, and Shoji Hamada’s own son, Shinsaku Hamada, and grandson, Tomoo Hamada. As a founding member of the Mingei movement, an artistic philosophy focusing on traditional Japanese craft, Hamada forged a lasting legacy in the world of folk craft and has served as an inspiration for generations to follow.

This atmospheric view of Lake Como comes from artist Mallory Lake, whose pastel landscapes are rooted in firsthand experience. Over years of traveling throughout Italy, Lake documented sweeping terrain and urban moments with a camera, later translating these photographs into softly rendered pastel scenes. Working from her studio in Marlboro, Vermont, she revisits these images—cypress trees, architecture, and misted horizons—allowing close attention to texture, color, and atmosphere to transform memory into place. The resulting works reflect both reverence for the Italian landscape and a quiet rediscovery found through the act of looking again.

The chawan, or tea bowl, is at the heart of the Japanese tea ceremony. This vessel holds the tea and is integral to the ritual; it is also a piece of art to admire and can set the tone for the ceremony. When looking at each of these unique chawan, it is easy to appreciate the vast complexity of the glazes and the masterfully thrown shapes. One can imagine the feel of the glossy finishes or texture of the porous clay. In one's hands, these characteristics can be appreciated by close observation of the form, encapsulating the tea ceremony's practice of mindfulness. This seemingly simple form has been explored by many of the 15+ potters at Pucker Gallery. We invite you to visit and hold these chawan yourself to appreciate their artistry.

Happy Sunday 🌞 The Pick of the Week is Alexandra de Steiguer's "The Sea Exhales, Star Island." For nearly thirty years, de Steiguer has been photographing the Isles of Shoals in the winter. As the winter caretaker, she is the island’s sole resident for five months. Her images pay tribute to the wild elements that claim the Isles’ shores, reflecting connections within the natural world and the transitory, humbling nature of our residence in it. Please visit our Artsy page to enjoy more of de Steiguer's entrancing photographs! 📸🔮
