Perceived: Look Closely. Observe. Look Again.

Opening reception and gallery talk:
Ways of Seeing with the participating artists
Thursday September 12, 5:00 pm followed by a reception at 5:30pm

One of the roles of artists and scientists is to observe and describe the world.
What are the limits of our ability to see? How do we change that?
What do we learn by being deeply engaged, by looking as if for the first time?
And looking again, and again.

The artists in this exhibition are engaged with making an artwork as it progresses, observing/looking in real time, over time. The artwork itself makes these demands of the maker: How do we see? How do we not see? How do we remember what we see? This process of inquiry for both scientists and artists attempt to answer these questions as part of their respective practice.

We are pleased to be presenting Dreaming Flora: Artists and Flowers, June 11 - July 22, 2024
Opening reception Thursday, June 13, 5:30pm

Flowers are evocative for cultures around the world. They remind us of both joy and mourning, of human frailty, of death. One thinks about the 17th century Dutch obsession with tulips, beautiful paintings of flowers as warnings of Vanitas. They have a rich cultural history as symbols and motifs through many genres of art, including as still lifes and botanical studies.
The artists in the exhibition work in a variety of medium and often evoke earlier response to the natural world.

Suffolk University Gallery is pleased to present Artist/Curator/Curator/Artist, January 22 – March 8, 2024. On Thursday, February 1, there will be a gallery talk with the artists in the exhibit at 5:00pm, followed by a reception at 5:30pm.

What is an artist curator? An artist-curator is a practicing artist who also curates shows or runs not-for-profit spaces from which they exhibit their art and that of other artists. For some artist-curators, it is the freedom to create art, control its output and have a say in how it is exhibited that appeals, for others it is a means of survival, a way of gaining exposure for the art that they and others do. Tate.org.UK

Like musicians who produce albums or conduct orchestras, actors who write screenplays and direct movies, many visual artists also curate exhibitions in gallery or academic settings, in addition to their own art practice. The artists in this exhibit maintain both these activities, one often informing the other. The act of curating parallels the activity in the studio, i.e., an idea is expressed and manifested materially.
