Vose Galleries is pleased to present our staff picks from our ongoing Winter Sale. Learn what drew us to these masterful works from our traditional and contemporary artists!
To start off, Gallery Director Carey Vose shares her thoughts on ‘Children Picking Flowers’ by Theodore Wendel:
“Originally from Midway, Ohio, Theodore Wendel traveled to Europe to study at the Royal Academy in Munich. There, he became acquainted with the charismatic teacher Frank Duveneck, and subsequently studied with him in the late 1870’s and early 1880’s. By 1886, he traveled to Giverny, France, with fellow Americans John Leslie Breck, Willard Metcalf, and Theodore Robinson, to paint alongside Claude Monet, whose influence greatly brightened his palette from his darker and more academic early work.
Wendel married Philena Stone in 1897, and they settled on her ancestral farm in Ipswich, Massachusetts, where the sweeping marsh views continued to act as inspiration for the artist for the rest of his career. In this wonderful example, the artist captures the heavy humidity of the late summer afternoon, with neighborhood children playing on the road that transected the farm at the time. Having had the opportunity to visit the property in recent years, I am sure that Wendel would be ecstatic to know that those same views that he painted one hundred years ago are still viewable today.”
