Did you know that because of its range of wavelengths on the electromagnetic spectrum, the human eye is most sensitive to the color green and all its shades? Thanks to this evolutionary adaptation, we are able to appreciate all the subtle hues artists use in their paintings. With spring officially one week away, we hope you are able to enjoy all the wonderful greens in the world around you!

🎨 shown are details of ‘Study for ‘Heron Brook’’ by George Inness, ‘In the Studio, Southampton’ by Bernard Lamotte, ‘Wind in the Appletree’ by Karl Schrag, ‘Squam River from Andrews Bridge’ by Jacob Greenleaf, ‘Stone Wall’ by Gary Milek, ‘Squash’ by Janet Monafo, ‘Dappled Creek’ by Liz Haywood-Sullivan, and ‘Willet Calling’ by Cindy House

Happy International Women’s Day! We are proud to celebrate several of the incredible women artists Vose Galleries has the privilege to represent, both historical and contemporary!

Featured works are by:

Jane Peterson, whose vibrant gouaches and oil paintings earned her numerous prizes throughout her career and the honor of being named ‘outstanding individual of the year’ by the American Historical Society in 1938.

Gladys Nelson Smith, widely celebrated for her depictions of motherhood, children, and floral still lifes, won the popular prize at the Society of Washington Artists’ 48th anniversary exhibition in 1939.

Liz Haywood-Sullivan’s award-winning paintings are defined by strong values, graphic compositions, and brilliant atmospheric effects. She has been designated a Master Pastelist by the Pastel Society of America and an Eminent Pastelist by the International Association of Pastel Societies.

Janet Monafo’s bold, luscious still life and figural paintings have earned her nationwide recognition, and she has received awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Academy of Design, and the Adolf and Esther Gottlieb Foundation.

Cindy House’s exceptional paintings highlighting the harmonious co-existence between New England’s landscape and its avian inhabitants have earned her the distinction of Master Pastelist by the International Association of Pastel Societies and Master Wildlife Artist by the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Woodson Art Museum.

🎨 shown are details of ‘Boats at a New York Dock’ by Jane Peterson, ‘Poppies and Hydrangeas’ by Gladys Nelson Smith, ‘Nightfall’ by Liz Haywood-Sullivan, ‘Irish Pottery’ by Janet Monafo, and ‘Quiet Marsh’ by Cindy House, all available at Vose Galleries

Next up in our featured staff picks from the Winter Sale, Gallery Manager Courtney Kopplin shares her thoughts on ‘Street in Provincetown’ by Lillian Meeser:

“Lillian Burk Meeser’s ‘Street in Provincetown’ draws me in with its saturated palette and dappled brushwork, qualities which reflect the vibrant energy of the town itself. Situated at the tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown has long been a destination for creative souls like Meeser, who summered and had a studio in nearby Wellfleet. She began exhibiting with the Provincetown Art Association in 1916 and was inspired by the town’s narrow streets and sandy dunes, rendering these subjects with her expert eye for composition and color. The diagonal of the street is braced on both sides by the strong verticals of trees and telephone poles, and sunlight floods the painting, with even the shadows cast in lighter tones of rich purple, blue, and red. This painting heralds the arrival of summer!”

Vose Galleries is pleased to present our staff picks from our ongoing Winter Sale. Learn what drew us to these masterful works from our traditional and contemporary artists!

To start off, Gallery Director Carey Vose shares her thoughts on ‘Children Picking Flowers’ by Theodore Wendel:

“Originally from Midway, Ohio, Theodore Wendel traveled to Europe to study at the Royal Academy in Munich. There, he became acquainted with the charismatic teacher Frank Duveneck, and subsequently studied with him in the late 1870’s and early 1880’s. By 1886, he traveled to Giverny, France, with fellow Americans John Leslie Breck, Willard Metcalf, and Theodore Robinson, to paint alongside Claude Monet, whose influence greatly brightened his palette from his darker and more academic early work.

Wendel married Philena Stone in 1897, and they settled on her ancestral farm in Ipswich, Massachusetts, where the sweeping marsh views continued to act as inspiration for the artist for the rest of his career. In this wonderful example, the artist captures the heavy humidity of the late summer afternoon, with neighborhood children playing on the road that transected the farm at the time. Having had the opportunity to visit the property in recent years, I am sure that Wendel would be ecstatic to know that those same views that he painted one hundred years ago are still viewable today.”

The infinite complexity of painting white has intrigued artists for centuries. A close look at James McNeill Whistler’s ‘Symphonies in White’, or John Singer Sargent’s ‘Lady Agnew of Locknaw’, reveals the stunning array of colors to be found in the play of light and shadow on a supposedly colorless surface. Please enjoy this selection of paintings at the gallery that showcase the nuances in white!

🎨 Shown are details of ‘2 1/2 Bartletts’ by Janet Monafo, ‘Afternoon Sunlight, New England’ by Aldro T. Hibbard, ‘Tidal Way’ by Liz Haywood-Sullivan, ‘End of a Winter’s Day’ by Robert Emmett Owen, and ‘Cold Stream Winter, Enfield, Maine’ by June Grey
