SEPTEMBER 28TH - DECEMBER 5TH

Evolution explores transformation in its many forms—of nature, identity, memory, and place. Timed to the shifting landscape of fall, the exhibition brings together artists whose work reflects what happens as we move from one state into another: colors deepen, surfaces accumulate, materials weather, and familiar forms take on new meaning. Going behind the scenes to visit my project in Burano!

It took a lot of guts to ask a local to drive us out, but it was so worth it. Wonderful to see the wind, water and algae already starting to affect the piece. This is exactly what I was hoping for—the lagoon becoming part of the work.

Though no tourists get to see it, it’s quite endearing to see the locals truly enjoy the beauty of their lagoon. And a huge bonus: getting there at 8am meant we were among the lucky few who actually got to experience Burano in its purity, before the crowds took over.

A very special morning!

I think it’s imperative as an artist, gallerist and instructor to keep seeking inspiration from contemporary art—to stay curious about what artists around the world are exploring and bring that energy back into the studio and classroom.

That’s one reason I love heading to major exhibitions like the Biennale: to witness where contemporary art is moving, what ideas keep resurfacing, and what stops me in my tracks.

I’m a firm believer that art needs to touch you emotionally first, before the conceptual ideas enter the picture. That isn’t always easy to find in today’s increasingly politicized art world—but there are always gems that remind me exactly why I came looking.

Here are a few that stayed with me from the curated Arsenale exhibition, “In Minor Keys,” along with a few of the national pavilions.
