With delegates from eight (!) states up for grabs on 05/25/1976, the Carter family made appearances everywhere they could, including at the Oregon Zoo where they met the unofficial mascot of the Democratic primary day, Slim the Donkey.

Carter picked up 137 delegates of a possible 260, a small majority. Notably, he lost Alabama, albeit to its own Governor George Wallace.

Today we honor the lives lost in defense of our great nation.

In his 1980 remarks on signing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Bill, President Carter said, “In honoring those who answered the call of duty, we do not honor war. But we honor the peace they sought, the freedoms that they fought to preserve, and the hope that they held out to a world that's still struggling to learn how to settle differences among people and among nations without resorting to violence.”

Today is Bob Dylan’s 85th birthday. Bob Dylan and Jimmy Carter shared a close, 50-year friendship that began in 1974, with Carter describing Dylan as one of his best friends and a major influence on his relationship with his sons. The bond, rooted in a mutual appreciation for songwriting and "kindred" spirits, lasted until Carter's passing in late 2024. Happy birthday Bob Dylan!

Seen here are then-governor Jimmy Carter with two of his sons, Chip and Jeff, greeting Bob Dylan in the Governor's Mansion following his Atlanta concert in January of 1974.
