We're drawn to works that hold contradictions. In Agua, Paula Cortazar transforms dense black marble into something unexpectedly fluid. The surface ripples like water caught in motion, reminding us that change leaves its mark on everything, including stone.

Make an appointment with us to see her stone works in person for the Held Traces exhibit.

[Artist Spotlight] The Held Traces exhibit, for Gabriel Tendai Choto ( ) is a meditation on stillness, healing, and emotional acceptance. Through stripped-back compositions and suspended figures, Choto explores the weight of unresolved experiences and the quiet courage it takes to confront them.

Moving between loss, intimacy, vulnerability, and renewal, the works invite us to reflect on what it means to remain present with ourselves. Rather than longing for what is missing, Choto’s paintings remind us that fulfillment begins when we embrace what is.

Gabriel Tendai Choto

Featured piece: Tethered to the Present

A figure pauses, held in a moment that feels both quiet and uncertain, neither moving forward nor turning back.

In Tethered to the Present, Choto reflects on stillness as a space of decision; something can shift simply by staying and allowing the present moment to fully arrive.

Choto's painting sits within a broader body of work in the [Held Traces exhibit] that outlines a path from disconnection toward healing and where acceptance begins not in movement, but in stillness.

About the Artist: Gabriel Tendai Choto, ( ) born in 1995 in Harare, Zimbabwe, and raised in Bradford, currently lives and works in West Yorkshire, England. After completing his Diploma in Art and Design at Leeds Arts University (formerly Leeds College of Art) in 2012, Choto earned a BAFA in Drawing from Camberwell College of Arts (UAL), London, in 2014. He recently completed an MFA at Central Saint Martins in London, UK.

Choto's solo exhibitions include FNB Art Joburg: GALLERyLABs (2020), 'Kumba' at Anima Mundi Gallery, UK (2021), and Deep, Deep Down In The Belly Of The Earth at ADA Contemporary Art Gallery, Ghana (2023),  Resonance: Echoes of Acceptance, ADA X TAFETA , TAFETA,London (2024).

As we lean into the comfort of the holidays and a sense of home, we reflect on our latest exhibition, “Memories of Home.” In particular, we want to highlight “The Den,” an installation co-curated by Jailyn Easley ( ) and James Williams III ( .third._ ), presented as part of 2025. This exhibition invited viewers to reflect on space, identity, and the restorative practice of archiving with intention.

What began as a feature of empathetic design pieces from Williams’ practice evolved into a collaborative project. When Easley invited Williams to co-curate “The Den,” Williams sought to build upon the warmth of Easley’s curatorial direction by contributing lived artifacts that reflect his eclectic interests and explorations across art, design, and culture.

The installation features several objects of sentimental value from Williams’ personal collection and interdisciplinary practice, most notably the original Shirley v2 (2023) which Easley saw as the heart of “The Den”. This silhouette, an homage to Williams’ grandmothers’ love languages, was designed to evoke the sensation of a soft, warm hug when the seat and backrest are engaged. The Living Table v2 (2022), developed in New York, aimed to address the desire for versatile furniture that increases fluidity in limited spatial environments. The “Love Letter” Candle (2023) was blended and hand-poured with essential oils that effortlessly soften the mood in any space. The commemorative candle was released alongside the opening of Williams’ “Many Moons” solo exhibition at 1708 Gallery in his hometown of Richmond, VA. These artifacts from Williams’ practice were accompanied by a curation of other enduring objects of note that far transcend their domestic function.

Happy holidays from Memento and the artists we are grateful to showcase. Commissions for Williams’ practice are open—DM us for more details.
