A Baron's Summer Home: Yulo Park, Bacolod City

Right alongside the public park of Bacolod, there was Yulo’s Park. Built in August 1919 by statesman Don Mariano Yulo, this beautiful ancestral residence quickly became the favored gathering place for the Negrense elite, radiating a quiet provincial elegance.

Its concrete and wooden walls have quietly absorbed monumental history. Presidents Manuel Quezon and Sergio Osmeña once dined in these halls.

When World War II arrived, the estate was miraculously spared. Alfredo Yulo, serving as Bacolod’s wartime mayor, shielded his home from ruin. Yet, postwar peace brought slow decay, as encroaching urbanization gradually devoured its once-sprawling, lush gardens.

Today, enshrined as an Important Cultural Property, the house stands as a poignant survivor of the Sugarlandia era. The house is open to the public, however, one must make an appointment in advance.

Old Beauty: Caballo Ancestral House, Baclayon, Bohol

The Caballo ancestral house is one of the many ancestral houses in the heritage town of Baclayon. It was built by a lumber merchant probably in the 1920s and is located prominently beside the national highway in Baclayon.

The house is a typical example of American Houses in the Philippines during the colonization. A small overhang is supported by an arched colonnade which gives the house a more unique look. It has capiz windows, ventanillia and is mostly filled with original antique furniture. Today the house is preserved.

Fort San Pedro in the Year 1738: Cebu's Guardian Fort

Long before the high-rises and reclamation ports reshaped the harbor, this narrow spit of land stood vigil over the Mactan channel. You are looking at Plate 58 of Governor-General Fernando de Valdés Tamón’s 1738 survey.

Back then, it was formally christened La Fuerza del Santísimo Nombre de Jesús. Spanish engineers mapped out this compact, triangular fortress of coral stone and timber, designed to guard the settlement from seaborne raids and keep watchful eyes on foreign sails drifting near the shoreline.

Three distinct bastions anchored its defense: La Concepción, Ignacio de Loyola, and San Miguel. Notice how the open sea directly lapped its seaward ramparts, an unbroken maritime boundary that modern urban reclamation has long since pushed back.

It is easy to forget, amid our rush through Plaza Independencia, that every stone beneath our feet once formed Spain’s earliest, fiercest foothold in the Visayas.

Heritage Church in Ruins - Daanbantayan Church, Cebu

Daanbantayan church is the northernmost municipality in Cebu and was established on August 10, 1858.

The parish is dedicated to St. Rose of Lima was once made of lighter materials, though it was soon replaced by the church we see today.

The present church possibly finished construction in the year 1886 under the term of Fr. Feliciano Torres, this is according to a cartouche on the façade of the church. The church is constructed in baroque architecture with many ornamental additions to its facade.

On the night of September 30, 2025 the facade of the church was heavily damaged by the 6.9 Bogo Earthquake.
