Habagat sweeps across Cebu

This is a view of the gloomy skies yesterday from the roofdeck of your building as a result of the volcanic ashfall that reached Cebu City from Mt. Kanlaon, Negros Occidental. Today, Cebu is also experiencing rain showers brought about by Tropical Cyclone Inday and the southwest monsoon .

As part of the museum’s disaster risk reduction initiatives, your also takes weather monitoring into great consideration to ensure that we are able to prepare the necessary risk mitigation and communication for the safety of the museum collections and our visitors. The challenges that climate change poses have geared museums to be more prepared, especially in disaster and risk management, to safeguard our heritage for its preservation and conservation.

Happy !

travelled to the Philippines as seedlings from Central America through the 250-year old Manila-Acapulco in the 17th century. It is among the plants introduced and cultivated in the islands, eventually becoming an integral part of Cebuano culinary traditions. Because of the Philippines’ identical tropical climate with Central America, cacao has grown widely especially in the province of Cebu. Once cultivated primarily in household backyards, cacao is now actively grown in the towns of , , and , as well as in parts of Central Cebu highlands, where it produces some of the finest-quality varieties.

Today, cacao holds an important place in Cebuano life. Its beans are transformed into (unsweetened cacao tablets), the key ingredient in (traditional hot chocolate), and are also used in a variety of chocolate pastries and dishes. Not only does 𝘴𝘪𝘬𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦 warm our bellies in the morning or during afternoon merienda, it is also nutritious as it contains antioxidants and minerals that support good health.

These enduring practices show how culinary traditions from different cultures can become part of our own heritage. Like the stories preserved in museums, every cup of 𝘴𝘪𝘬𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦 reminds us of the rich history, craftsmanship, and cultural connections that continue to shape our communities.

Diversity among s*xes can also be found in nature. This was presented by Cebu Provincial Veterinarian, Dr. Mary Rose Vincoy, in her lecture titled 𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘪𝘺𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘯: Understanding Sexual Diversity of Philippine Fauna through Dimorphism and Reversal last June 25, 2026 at your . Sexual dimorphism refers to the distinct and observable physical and reproductive differences between males and females of the same species, while s*x reversal is the process by which certain organisms change their s*x in response to environmental, social, or biological factors.

Dr. Vincoy enumerated Cebu’s endemic and resident species manifesting these two phenomena: the Cebu Flower Pe**er (plumage dimorphism); Cebu Land Snails (simultaneous hermaphroditism); the Cebu Reef Coral Systems along the Tañon Strait that include s*x-changing fishes such as wrasse, grouper, and parrotfish populations; Cebu Seahorses (male pregnancy), Cebu White-eye (subtle dimorphism); Gecko Species from the Gekko mindorensis group (parthenogenesis). Other species with similar s*xual characteristics can also be found at the Olango Island Wildlife Sanctuary such as the Whimbrel, Dunlin, Grey Plover, and Common Kingfisher.

Held during in June, the lecture concluded with Dr. Vincoy’s thought-provoking reflection: “𝘒𝘪𝘯𝘢𝘪𝘺𝘢𝘩𝘢𝘯 does not discriminate. Understanding biodiversity helps us understand ourselves - not by reducing humans to animals, but by expanding our sense of what is possible, natural, and valid.” The message underscored how scientific inquiry can broaden our appreciation of both the natural world and human diversity.

𝗞𝘂𝗹𝘂𝗸𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗮-𝗕𝗮𝗷𝗮𝘂 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝗖𝗲𝗯𝘂

Your became more than a place that preserves and promotes Cebu’s cultural and natural heritage. During #𝘒𝘶𝘭𝘶𝘬𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯 (𝘒𝘶𝘭𝘶𝘬𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘥𝘰 𝘴𝘢 𝘒𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘯) on June 29, 2026, the Sama-Bajau community in Cebu transformed the museum into a living space, filling its halls with stories and lived experiences of their rich and enduring heritage.

During the program, the performed one of their traditional dances, often presented as a gesture of welcome and during significant occasions. They introduced the #𝘺𝘢𝘣𝘺𝘢𝘣, a traditional fishing method that involves rhythmically splashing the water with paddles to guide the fish toward waiting nets in shallow waters. The community also shared the stories behind their traditional clothing, shell and pearl accessories, and their indigenous boat, locally known as #𝘭𝘦𝘱𝘢, which differs greatly from the boats commonly seen in Cebu’s waters.

Through these encounters, the participants gained a deeper appreciation for Sama-Bajau’s way of life and thriving cultural practices. By the end of the discussion, the community shared their hope that more of their art, history, and traditions would find representation in the museum, allowing future generations to better understand and appreciate their heritage.

To mark the closing of the “𝘊𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘤𝘴 𝘰𝘧 𝘗𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘪𝘯𝘦 𝘊𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘵𝘩𝘦 16𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘦 20𝘵𝘩 𝘊𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴” exhibition, your successfully concluded its final Lecture Series on June 30, 2026, with the lecture, “Tracing the Precolonial Maritime Trade Route to the Philippines and Beyond,” delivered by archaeologist and social historian Dr. Jose Eleazar R. Bersales.

Drawing from archaeological discoveries, historical maps, and material evidence, Dr. Bersales discussed how precolonial Filipinos were active participants in extensive maritime trade networks long before the arrival of the Spaniards. His lecture highlighted the Philippines' strategic position within Asia, where the exchange of goods, technologies, ideas, and cultural traditions fostered connections with neighboring societies across the region.

This lecture, which was organized in partnership with the Philippine Map Collectors Society (PHIMCOS), brought together students, educators, museum professionals, tour guides, naval engineers, researchers, map collectors, and history enthusiasts. It concluded with an engaging Q&A session that encouraged meaningful discussions on the importance of archaeology and historical cartography in reconstructing and understanding the country's rich maritime past.
