Castello 925 Venice based non-for-profit organization with the aim of promoting art and “cre-activity”

(ENGLISH BELOW)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Castello 925 was born in the mind of its creator, Luca Caldironi, long before it ever became an actual space. Luca had been envisioning for a while a space dedicated to creativity, or rather, cre-activity, a 360-degree creative activity that would bring together art, culture, literature, leaving plenty of space for imagination! We’re not talking about a simple art-gallery, which would not only be reductive but also, I must say, outdated. This is a place where creative expressions of all kinds come to meet, clash and leave their footprint! A place to present “finished” works that were built elsewhere … but also a space where new ideas come to life and new co-operations! A place to live in and hang out, not just for grand openings, but for the everyday life of an artist, a writer’s research or exchanges of passionate art-seekers and collectors. Since 2011, “Castello925” has seen many an artist, author and collector go by, who kept the place alive with all sorts of projects. In 2015, following the success of those first years, a second location for “Castello925” was born, situated at number “780” of the same fondamenta San Giuseppe. Only 50 meters away from the first place it presents a new, much wider range of opportunities. The concept expands and the space, with the possibility to set up more complex exhibitions, makes new variables available. Variables that, thanks to the added location, will allow us to have two independent exhibitions at the same time, one close to the other but completely autonomous from one another, as synergic cultural activities that implement each other.

Between color and silence, something begins to emerge.

Whitney Hagen’s abstraction invites us to experience harmony, tension, emotion, and balance beyond the limits of representation. Forms do not need to explain themselves; they can suggest, unsettle, and resonate.

As Luca Caldironi writes in Traces (p. 8), thinking means learning to move within partial light, without confusing clarity with truth.

Perhaps painting offers a similar experience: not the certainty of seeing everything, but the freedom to remain with what is still unfolding.

In Joe Diggs’s work, the mark comes before recognition, and intuition precedes meaning. Through spontaneous gestures, accidental forms, and the interplay of abstraction and figuration, the image emerges not as a predetermined vision, but as a discovery.

In The Other Side of the River, Diggs places the image of his own cataract at the centre of the composition, transforming the act of seeing into a meditation on perception itself. A clouded lens becomes a threshold between visibility and obscurity, memory and presence, loss and possibility.

The river, like the cataract, becomes a passage between realities. The city appears as both destination and distance, holding within its image the promise of arrival alongside the weight of absence. Here, grief and hope coexist, while the familiar becomes strange and the visible opens onto what lies beyond it.

For Diggs, painting is not simply a means of representing the world, but a way of discovering how we see, remember, and feel. Meaning remains open, continually emerging through the encounter between the artist, the image, and the viewer.

A trace becomes an image; an image becomes a threshold; and seeing becomes an act of discovery.

“In Venice” | Joe Diggs

Joe Diggs’ solo exhibition In Venice is currently on view at Castello 925, Venice, until 22 November 2026.

10 OTTOBRE

Buona lettura!

In this conversation, Luca Caldironi reflects on the possibility of cultivating a sense of hospitality toward otherness, allowing space for what is unfamiliar, unexpected, or even difficult to welcome.

But otherness is not only something we encounter in others. It also exists within ourselves, in those parts of our inner world that remain unfamiliar or difficult to recognize.

Making room for what is different, both around us and within us, may allow something unexpected to emerge, opening new ways of experiencing ourselves and the world.

We live in a time shaped by optimization, information overload, and instant opinions.

Art plays a different role: it creates space for the unexpected, and in doing so, expands our capacity for thinking.

Traces, Castello 925’s first published book, explores how art and psychoanalysis sustain the conditions for thought in contemporary life.

Over the coming weeks, we’ll share fragments from Traces: ideas, images, and questions that ask us to slow down and look again.

Not everything needs to resolve into an answer.

Sometimes, what matters is creating the space in which a thought can begin.
