"NON-Belief: Taiwan Intelligens of Precarity" is a collaborative project by students and faculty from National Cheng Kung University along with professional architects, presenting 17 responses to future architecture. The curator of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, Carlo Ratti, along with ( CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati), collaborated with Taiwan's (Bio-architecture Formosana) to participate in one of the exhibits, "Path of Knowledge - Southern Branch of the National Central Library." He envisions an experience of serendipity occurring within the library: he imagines a future library with ramps that will serve as a space for people to physically engage, interact, and discover knowledge. He hopes to overturn the conventional framework of knowledge, allowing architecture to evolve from a static environment into an organism that coexists with the public community and the environment, becoming the .

During the curatorial process of "NON-Belief: Taiwan Intelligens of Precarity," there has been a commitment to reflecting on and exploring architectural education. By facilitating collaboration between professional architects and National Cheng Kung University, a mutual exchange and application support between academia and industry has been established, highlighting Taiwan's uniqueness and developing many perspectives originating from Tainan.
Have you ever observed the relationship between and ? Tainan has historically developed as a city along its terrain, only being segmented by urban planning during the Japanese colonial period, resembling an wrapped in . In contrast, Venice is composed of and small islands, interconnected by numerous and arcades to form a city. These two ancient capitals, with their historical significance, have developed in precisely opposite directions in terms of urban structure, revealing a wisdom of inverted analogy. For example, the exhibit "Tāi-uân and Venice: The Embodied Intelligens of Two Island Republics" uses a Taiwanese banquet table to model the streets of Tainan, allowing the rotating tabletop to flip the interior to the exterior and the exterior arcades to the interior. It is hoped that at the exhibition site, this will create a reverse contrast with the urban history of Venice's island streets and arcades, providing an opportunity for intertextual dialogue with the world.

The term that is particularly emphasized refers to the opposition to ? Or does it seek to explore the binary juxtaposition between existence and non-existence?
From centuries of colonial history to geopolitical influences, and frequently facing natural disasters, the people living on this island have constantly learned to coexist with an unstable life. The wisdom of Taiwanese architecture emerges in the gray areas of this back-and-forth existence, which is why the exhibition chooses to interpret this state of coexistence with the term "NON."
The wisdom of "NON" is not just a concept; it is also reflected in architectural practice. For example, in the exhibit "Qigu Floating Escape," the architect begins to engage in physical labor and utilize local materials between their own fish ponds and the solar panels covering them, constructing a set of small buildings designed to escape urban life and float. This creates a new mode of coexistence—one that acknowledges high-tech realities while preserving the resilience of local living. It allows the rapidly changing landscape of Qigu, its fluid perceptions, barrenness, and sunsets, to become a series of stage backdrops, seeking a new balance and adaptation between technological development, traditional industries, and physical labor, as curator Cheng-Luen HSUEH observes.

In the exhibition "NON-Belief: Taiwan Intelligens of Precarity," does refer to religious culture or the collective consciousness of society?
As curator Cheng-Luen HSUEH observes the pulse of contemporary society, he gradually realizes that Taiwan's recent collective consciousness is closely related to the international fame of production. During the pandemic, it even became a bargaining chip for resource exchange, almost an inevitable part of life. For instance, in Tainan's Qigu, fish ponds were transformed into photovoltaic fields for chip production, altering the landscape. Taiwanese people are willing to make sacrifices for chips, akin to the existence of "belief."
The belief in and is reflected in how the construction of high-speed rail has changed daily life in Taiwan. People believe that urban development brings faster and more efficient quality of life, which is accompanied by a vision of high . However, within this belief system, Taiwanese people often navigate the uncertainty of life shaped by history and geopolitical factors, easily oscillating between belief and unbelief. This duality gives rise to a unique perspective and architectural wisdom belonging to Taiwan. Through this exhibition, we hope to share the island's unique characteristics with the international community.

░ Taiwan at the Venice Biennale of Architecture ░
Since 2000, Taiwan has entered an era of participation in international architectural exhibitions. The National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts invited architects and artists to collaborate on the first exhibition "Life City" at the 7th Venice Biennale of Architecture. Starting in 2006, the NTMOFA has been seeking curators instead, hoping that through the curatorial integration and discourse, more outstanding teams could be selected to represent Taiwan in exhibitions.
From the transformation of cities and regions, exploration of architecture beyond buildings, to intersection in architectural space, the first decade of the exhibition (2000-2010) witnessed discussions and transformations in urban public planning. As we enter the second decade, closely aligned with the theme of the Venice Biennale of Architecture, contemporary thoughts shift from urban visions to a focus on the shared living nurtured by the land of Taiwan. This includes attention to the landscapes constructed by ordinary people, using Yilan as an example to explore the “Freespace” of learning from the local environment.
The theme of 2021, "How Will We Live Together," resonates with the global pandemic. The exhibition "Primitive Migration from/to Taiwan" aims to remind people to rethink the essence of life and to engage in a dialogue and exchange between human life and architectural design with nature, returning to a primitive sensation. This field transcends the disturbances of the pandemic and poetically realizes its goals. In 2023, in response to the theme "The Laboratory of the Future," the exhibition "Diachronic Apparatuses of Taiwan – Architecture as on-going details within landscape" seeks to facilitate a dialogue between built landscapes and real land, learning anew from the countryside and unearthing possible methods for the future development of Taiwanese architecture.
From dialogue with nature to the exploration of future experiments, "NON-Belief: Taiwan Intelligens of Precarity" in 2025 responding to the theme of "Intelligens," promises to be exciting!

“To face a burning world, architecture must harness all the intelligence around us.” The Curator of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, Carlo Ratti has declared.
The title of this year’s Biennale is “Intelligens. Natural. Artificial. Collective.” Curator Carlo Ratti uses the term “Intelligens,” highlighting the last syllable, “gens,” which means “people” in Latin, to discuss three types of intelligence—natural, artificial, and collective—and their role in architectural design amidst contemporary environmental and climate challenges.
To response the title, Collateral Event of the 19th International Architecture Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, Taiwan’s official collateral exhibition, “NON-Belief: Taiwan Intelligens of Precarity“ will use the dialectical relationship between belief and NON-Belief in Taiwan's landscape and spatial governance to demonstrate how intelligence operates amidst multiple contradictions, exploring new architectural and environmental governance strategies and identifying various manifestations of intelligence and their impact on spatial governance.

People who yearn to live closer to nature, find themselves oscillating between urban and rural areas. This kind of spontaneous and ever-changing nomadic lifestyle is characteristic of travellers, spiritual practitioners, and those who pursue their sanctuary in nature.
Situated in East Asia, Taiwan is located at the convergent point of the Eurasian Plate and the Philippine Sea Plate. As one of the homelands of the Austronesian people, Taiwan is surrounded by sea and approximately 70% of the landscape is covered in verdant Alpine forests and rolling hills. As the 38th largest island in the world, Taiwan has an overall marine tropical climate, where the northern and central regions of Taiwan are subtropical, the southern region is tropical, and the mountainous regions are temperate. Taiwan is also home to over 4,077 species of native vascular plants, 800 species of vertebrates, and 20,000 recorded species of insects.
There is a fine line between the balance of development and conservation of nature that is worthy of exploring.
Taiwan-based interdisciplinary design team Divooe Zein Architects studio is committed to researching and planning projects in nature and rural fields for years. In 2014, the studio established “siu siu – Lab of Primitive Senses”, an experimental base with a core value of generating a “nature-based learning field”. The success of interdisciplinary collaboration between botanists, traditional medicine practitioners, aboriginal artists, climatologists, spiritualists, yoga instructors, and many others, is shared with the public through this experimental base. In 2017, the team collaborated with CMP Village on the project “The Forest BIG” which integrated multiple industries with the concept of “learning from nature”, further demonstrating the values and the influence of this concept. Through observing the everchanging landscape and environment of each unique architecture work and carrying out in-depth fieldworks, the team discovered that, the “tranquillity of mind” is an essential framework that co-exists with nature, ultimately ensuring that we can continue to develop yet not overly exploit nature.
The Taiwan Exhibition presents not only independent experimental works such as siu siu - Lab of Primitive Senses in Taipei and Nature Monastery in Bali, but also other planning and conceptual design projects that partnered with enterprises such as “The Forest BIG” and CMP Village, “Semi-Ecosphere Glass House” and Spring Pool Glass and JUT foundation, as well as “Lab of Primitive Perception” and developers in China. These selected projects reflect different cultural backgrounds, geographical landscape, commercial industries, space usage and other thematics. Despite having their own unique perspectives, each project plays a significant role in bridging the gap between various local contexts and demonstrating the burgeoning values of cross-disciplinary collaborations. Divooe Zein Architects studio explores and excavates the gradually forgotten elements — nature, species of flora and fauna, and culture during the “Primitive Migration” in our homeland. By creating living spaces and examining an architecture’s construction process, the studio seeks to learn from it surroundings and further collaborate with those whose daily lives are deeply imbued with ancient wisdom. People from communities of various micro-scale start to progressively merge with each other, which then paints a picture of a wholesome life.
