Today we celebrate David Gill’s birthday. It has been 39 years since he opened his first gallery on the Fulham Road in Chelsea in 1987, with his vision of design and art, which remains always relevant, enduring, and forward-thinking. Happy birthday!

‘Species’ Sofa in deep crimson by Fredrikson Stallard is defined by aggressive amorphous structure, resembling carved rock. Conceived as a study in evolution, the designer duo frame the work as a medium for chaos and transformation rooted in natural processes of erosion and formation.

‘WE ARE WHERE WE ARE’ | On display through 30 May, a new collection by British artist Barnaby Barford.

This exhibition marks a 22-year relationship between Barford and David Gill Gallery. He worked extensively with porcelain figurines between 2002 and 2011, a body of work through which he first became widely known. Returning to the medium after a 14-year hiatus felt significant.

“When I cut up and put figures together again, it feels like I am speaking a language I haven’t used in a long time,” he says. “In that sense, it feels like coming home.”

‘WE ARE WHERE WE ARE’ | Opening this Friday, the latest exhibition by British artist Barnaby Barford.

Spanning 35 ceramic sculptures and several large-scale drawings, the exhibition brings together a body of work exploring how we are coping a quarter of the way through the 21st century – a time marked by psychological overload, acceleration and a pervasive sense of inertia.

Barford uses found porcelain figurines which he decapitates and reconfigures, assembling sprawling scenes that echo the moral panoramas of artists such as Pieter Brueghel the Elder, Hieronymus Bosch and William Hogarth. Darkly comic, the works bring humour and absurdity to today’s volatility.

From Barbara Nanning’s debut design exhibition, ‘When Light Surrounds Us’, the ‘Eternal Spring II’ table lamp is composed of unique snow-white glass flora, quietly emerging to capture a moment of spring frozen in time.
