Today we are celebrating the trailblazer that was Marlow Moss

Born Marjorie Jewel Moss in 1889 in London into an upper-middle-class Jewish family, she changed her name to Marlow and adopted a gender-neutral presentation in her late 20s’. This was an act of self-determination, challenging societal norms around gender and sexuality at a time when such decisions were often stigmatised.

Creating both paintings and sculptures, Moss is credited as the first British Constructivist associated with the De Stijl movement, working alongside Piet Mondrian.

Moss’s drawings show her working systematically, making numerous preparatory studies for paintings and sculptures. Untitled, c. 1930-40s testifies to the precision of Moss’s calculations and contains her trademark blue and yellow.

Moss’s works are rare, so Ward Moretti is always pleased to handle her work, and is happy to be able to present this current piece for sale.

Celebrating Georges Rouault

Today we celebrate the life and legacy of one of modern art’s most soulful voices.

Rouault’s unique blend of religious reverence and human vulnerability reached its height in one of his most enduring motifs: the clown. Unlike many artists who embraced the circus for its spectacle, Rouault looked beneath the surface—finding, in the painted smile of the performer, a profound reflection of the human condition.

Ward Moretti is pleased to present La famille du clown (c. 1930s)—a charming work from this iconic artist – featuring a striking portrait of a mother, father, and child—circus performers rendered with the gravity and dignity of a Holy Family.

This week in May in NY is maybe the biggest week of the art world calendar.

Between the auctions, the numerous fairs (TEFAF, Frieze, Nada, Independent, American Art Fair etc), the very many commercial gallery shows, and of course the incredible museum shows, there has been so much to see.

The sheer amount and miles to cover is bewildering and exhilarating in equal measure.

The galleries were on exceptional form. On the Upper East Side, the Matisse at Acquavella is simply a standout show by any measure, while the Gnoli at Levy Gorvy Dayan rewards close attention, and the Dalí at Di Donna is as seductive and strange as you’d hope.

In Chelsea the shows were also strong, our favourites being the Richter landscapes at Zwirner, the Kiefer & Frankenthaler at Gagosian and the Danielle McKinney at Boesky.

For the museums, the Raphael at the Met is a once-in-a-lifetime, sublime exhibition, with incredible depth. The Duchamp at MoMA is also excellent and demonstrates how versatile the artist was throughout his career – continuously pushing boundaries.

At the auctions, the S.I. Newhouse sale at Christie’s was the highlight, but what’s genuinely encouraging is the confidence across the board: strong results not just at the top end, but through the day sales too. The volume and value transacted this week suggests real appetite has returned to the market in a meaningful way.

As for the fairs, was the standout one for us.

To sum it up, it’s been a sleep deprived, intense but thoroughly brilliant week, where the weather has matched the market, it’s all been scorching!

Last night was a highly successful night for Christie’s . . .

The S.I. Newhouse auction set a very positive tone for NY Auction week, with more than $1.12B sold over the course of the evening.

The event was one of the best nights in Christie’s 259-year history, setting new auction records for artists of modern and postwar art including Po***ck, Brancusi, Neel and Rothko.

The Brancusi bronze head Danaïde sold for 107.6m a 50% increase from the sculptor’s previous auction record and that the top lot, Po***ck’s Number 7A sold for a staggering 181.2M

The endless blue skies lately have felt almost too vivid to be real—like stepping straight into a Yves Klein canvas.

It’s the kind of blue that lingers, that shifts your mood, that stirs the soul.

We recently sold this stunning Yves Klein painting, IKB 43, 1953, featuring his signature International Klein Blue (IKB) pigment.

If you’d like to learn more about Klein or the other artists we work with, please get in touch to make an appointment.

Whether monumental or intimate, unique or editioned, at Ward Moretti we have a deep appreciation for the power of three-dimensional art.

For International Sculpture Day, we’re reflecting on a selection of works we’ve recently placed with private collectors—spanning artists, mediums, scales, and subjects. Each piece tells its own story, brought to life through form, texture, and space.

Behind every placement is a meticulous process: ensuring each sculpture is expertly handled, authenticated, and presented in the finest possible condition.

It’s always a privilege to see these works find their place within significant collections around the world.

Despite being famous for her captivating Op Art paintings, Bridget Riley was long influenced by the works of renowned 19thC French colourists such as Monet, Cézanne and Seurat.

Ward Moretti is pleased to present an opportunity to acquire “Revision of Study, 23/6/86”.

This exquisite gouache on paper, belongs to Riley’s innovative ‘Rhomboid’ series — works inspired by her study of colourists, most especially Seurat, whose influence she translated into dynamic planes of light and motion.

“I learned from Seurat this important thing about colour and light, that ‘a light’ can be built from colour. I learned a great deal about interaction.” Bridget Riley

Images and video above are from last year’s wonderful MusĂ©e d’Orsay exhibition ‘Bridget Riley: Starting Point’ which celebrated the connection between the two artists.

Art history isn’t just shaped by artists—it’s shaped by those who believed in them first.
Ambroise Vollard was one of the most influential dealers of the 20th century, championing artists like Picasso, Renoir and Cézanne.
From organising groundbreaking exhibitions to acquiring entire studios, his eye helped define the rise of modern art.
A true marchand-découvreur, his legacy lives on in the masterpieces now held in museums around the world.
