We are Marine Artists, London, and are leading dealers in fine marine art.

One of the painters we are proud to represent is the Dutch artist Maarten Platje, who has built up a reputation as one of the world’s leading marine artists in a very short career so far.

Seen here is a wonderful painting of HMS Victory before Gibraltar by Maarten Platje, currently available for sale through our website www.marineartists.co.uk

Days in the Royal Navy were punctuated by the firing of a gun, none more important than those marking sunrise and sunset.

In this extraordinary painting Maarten Platje shows the most famous of all British Royal Navy ships HMS Victory firing her Evening Gun. Behind her is seen that great symbol of British power the mighty Rock of Gibraltar.

The artist has combined his usual exceptional skill in painting the great ships of that era with an atmosphere of very moving lyrical romance.

GEOFF HUNT, P.P.R.S.M.A.
(British, Contemporary)

"Commodore Nelson's Squadron: Gulf of Genoa, 11th August 1796"
Oil on Linen Canvas 22 x 30 inches (56 x 76 cm)

Signed, lower right
Framed

By 1796 Nelson had been in command of his favourite ship, the 64-gun HMS Agamemnon, for three years, steadily gaining in experience and seniority. While serving under Admirals Hood, Hotham and Jervis in the Mediterranean he had often been given overall command of a squadron of ships where, as senior captain, he was referred to by the courtesy title of commodore (not at this time a substantive rank), but he did not hoist his broad pendant as a first-class Commodore until 8th April 1796. Three days after this proud moment he led a squadron westward from Genoa along the Ligurian coast in support of the Austrian army, then pursuing a French army towards Savona. The ships were 'sailing along shore', an exceptionally unusual phrase to see in a logbook; they were in fact so close in to the steep-to coast that they could actually see the armies and see and hear the firing. From left to right: Agamemnon, Diadem (64), Meleager (32); the squadron also included Blanche (32), which appears to have been out ahead.
