Ab/Anbar

Ab/Anbar http://www.ab-anbar.com The gallery provides an important platform for international artists, often allowing them their first exhibitions in Tehran.

Established in 2014, Ab/Anbar began in response to a need for the professional development of artists and facilitating exchanges between artists and art professionals in Tehran and globally. Our ethos is to stay borderless through a public programme that responds to our locality, alongside the ever-changing global situation that we currently find ourselves in. We create a dialogue with our audienc

e, stimulate artistic practices by producing and presenting challenging works, whilst simultaneously creating new ways for our audience to engage with art on an international platform. Previous exhibitions include Babak Golkar, Anahita Ramzi, Reza Aramesh, Bahman Mohasses and Sirak Melkonian. Ab/Anbar provide a space for the production and dissemination of contemporary art through a critical approach that includes guest-curated exhibitions, lectures, talks, screenings, performances, publications, events and special projects.

‘Trilogy: Then…’ presents three bodies of work created from 2009 to 2024 by Iranian artist Mohammad Ghazali, focusing on his exploration of the possibilities of photography to examine the relations between urban spaces and the stories of its inhabitants. Often presenting traces of human presence in the absence of their figures, he reveals glimpses of the socio-politics of his city, Tehran, through works with deceptive simplicity that calls for closer examination. This active participation required of the viewer challenges the blurred lines of authorship, but also of the presumed role of image as evidence, adopting photography as a means to provoke unanswered questions. Ghazali’s work underscores the fluidity of perception and narrative, suggesting that our engagement and interpretation of images are dynamic processes, rather than fixed truths.

For his first exhibition at Ab-Anbar’s project space, Martin Cordiano’s new series of sculptures invites us to delve into the essence of space and its profound significance in our lives through his perplexing constructions. The place we inhabit and how we signify it is at the core of Cordiano’s practice. Here, the works offer a distinctive perspective on the interplay between our daily routines, encounters with others, and the surrounding environment during historically significant moments. Though apparently simple on the surface, this body of work harbours complex implications and transcends traditional boundaries, not only of art and architecture but of the intricate relationships between them, the tangible world and societies.

So Long As Women Are Not Free, The People Are Not Free!

If you believe in this, be the voice of those who are in the brink of losing theirs. Digital authoritarianism is upon Iranians as the government shut the internet. Iran is in isolation. You can use your skills and networks to stand by Iranians inside Iran.
As a member of a vast and global art community, we extend our hand to all artists and art organisations for help and support. Spread the word, make awareness and stand by people of Iran and be their voice. The consistent fight for emancipation of women is a nearly two-century old fight in Iran. It was once fought by women. Today, as Bell Hook once said, feminism is for ‘everyone’.
