Jamie Fitzpatrick’s forthcoming exhibition ‘How Can We Hope to Keep Our Rivers Clean if All the Kids ‘Round Here are Wearing Liverpool Shirts’ opens at St Chads, London, UK, in Autumn 2024. Fitzpatrick is also included in the group show ‘Pop Life’ at City Art Centre, Edinburgh, UK, opening in November 2024, and he will commence a Hospitalfield Interdisciplinary residency later this year.⁠

Jamie Fitzpatrick is a British artist whose practice deals with the rhetoric of image making, the relevance of the figure and how objects and totemic gestures such as flags, statues or plinths are used within the work to impose forms of power and control.⁠ His work was first shown by VITRINE in 2016, soon after he graduated from the RCA London.
⁠
VITRINE’s programme has been focused on artists working in installation and sculpture, many whom address contemporary socio-political issues. We have showcased practices that flourish site-responsively, in alternative environments to the traditional white cube⁠.

Kara Chin is included in the exhibition ‘SCI-FI: Mythologies Transformed’ at Science Gallery Melbourne, AU, August 2024 - March 2025. Chin presents her animation ‘Awakening Ceremony’ (2021), which was previously shown in the exhibition ‘New Eden: Science Fiction Mythologies Transformed’ at ArtScience Museum, Singapore, earlier this year.⁠

Kara Chin is a British-Singaporean artist working across animation, ceramics, and installation. Her work inquires into the implications of fast evolving technologies, such as its ethical conundrums and potential consequences of developing robotics and artificial intelligence within the present and future. Chin’s practice combines transhumanist and nonhuman perspectives into fictional narratives to often humorously suggest ways new technologies assimilate into the everyday working and domestic environments.⁠

Tim Etchells is a pioneering British artist, writer and performance maker whose interdisciplinary practice is concerned with tropes of performativity, liveness and presence. He has been represented by VITRINE since 2015, producing four solo shows across all spaces as well as art fair presentations and outdoor commissions.

Binaries of exposure and concealment, construction and deconstruction, appearance and disappearance are explored in a body of work that takes multiple forms including performance, sculpture, drawing, video and installation, presented in multiple contexts, from galleries to public sites and found spaces.⁠ Etchells is concurrently Artistic Director of Forced Entertainment, a multi-award-winning, globally renowned, Sheffield-based theatre company.

To celebrate 40 years of Forced Entertainment in 2024, a new show ‘Signal to Noise’ is presented alongside other works at venues in London, including a UK premiere in October at Southbank Centre, London.
⁠
VITRINE’s programme is focused on interdisciplinary approaches in a variety of media and working with many artists who have performance- and language-based practices. We showcase works that flourish site-responsively, in alternative environments to the traditional white cube, and we have delivered private and public outdoor sculpture commissions international alongside our exhibition programme.

Rudy Loewe is included in the Toronto Biennial, September-December 2024, curated by Dominique Fontaine and Miguel A. Lopez. They will present a new work titled ‘Spaces of Return’ created during a recent residency in Toronto and ‘Anansi #3’ from their recent solo presentation with VITRINE at Independent 2024, New York, US. ⁠

Loewe is also exhibiting in the exhibition ‘Conversations’ at Walker Art Museum, Liverpool, UK, October 2024 until March 2025, and has further major projects to be announced shortly. ⁠

Rudy Loewe uses painting, drawing, textiles and sculpture as a method to visualise Black histories and social politics. Their practice explores what has become truth in the collective memory by looking at the past whilst envisaging futures that centre Black q***r and trans experience.‍⁠ ⁠

Loewe’s practice is highly informed by their ongoing visual examination of The National Archives, researched during their PhD. Loewe’s research interrogates and exposes Britain’s role in suppressing Black Power movements in the English-speaking Caribbean during the 1960s and 70s, as presented in their solo exhibition ‘A Significant Threat⁠’ at VITRINE Fitzrovia, in 2023. ⁠

Ashfika Rahman is a finalist for the Future Generation Art Prize 2024, supported by the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, with an exhibition taking place in August at PinchukArtCentre, Kyiv, UA. She will be in the Busan Biennale, titled ‘Seeing in the Dark’ 17 August - 20 October and in September will take her place as a resident at the Rijksakademie, Amsterdam, NL, for their 2024-2025 programme.⁠

Ashfika Rahman’s practice originates from photography, a medium that she utilises to explore and shed light on complex systemic social issues, predominantly in her homeland. Evolving beyond documentation, she activates collaborations within specifically chosen communities to raise awareness about alarming threats on humanity.⁠

In summer 2024, 14 years after its inception in London’s Bermondsey Square, VITRINE (which operates spaces in Fitzrovia, Bermondsey and Basel) will come to its close. The current shows in our two London galleries will be the final in the long-running programme across the UK and Switzerland, which will conclude over the weekend of 13th July 2024.

I am extremely proud of founding and running VITRINE, evolving it from a project space into a successful commercial gallery operating across two countries and constantly exploring new business models. The gallery has reached a high point, having produced over 100 shows with incredible artists and an unwavering commitment to experimentation, interdisciplinary practices and diversity throughout our programme.

The challenges facing galleries today are well documented; specifically the resources and staffing that are required to stay afloat and the growing expectations on mid-sized galleries to compete with much larger operations. The decision to end this chapter comes with sadness, but in the knowledge that it is the right one. It has been taken in a manner that celebrates 14 incredible years, maintains positivity with our network, and it allows all that we have worked on to flourish in a myriad of new forms, fully in keeping with VITRINE's founding principles.

I announce this news with enormous thanks to this network: to all those who have believed in, invested in, supported, exhibited with, collaborated with, worked with, and visited the gallery since 2010; To my colleagues (present and past), associates and clients. It has been an incredible journey together and these relationships have always been of the utmost importance to me.

Above all, my thanks to the artists represented by the gallery; Nadim Abbas, Nicole Bachmann, Edwin Burdis, Kara Chin, Tim Etchells, Cecilia Fiona, Jamie Fitzpatrick, Ludovica Gioscia, Sacha Ingber, Rudy Loewe, Milly Peck, Sam Porritt, Ashfika Rahman, Mamali Shafahi and Charlie Godet Thomas, who have each trusted me as a collaborator, confidant and creative partner. Many started out working with me early in their careers and a number of them for over a decade. I am incredibly grateful to each of you and for the amazing experience it has been.
