Jane Stothert, Artist in Focus 11th - 24th May 2026
Initially Jane became interested in simplyfing her images into colourful hard edged geometric shapes influenced by her time as a graphic designer. This was followed by more representational work.

Her screenprints are carefully planned using photographs and drawings, which she simplifies using Procreate on her iPad. Then she takes everything a step further making a collage to check colour and composition. The shapes created on the collage are then traced and used for the different layers of colour, which can require up to 20 pulls.

To actually print her screenprints. Firstly she traces the whole image. Then selecting the lightest colour she cuts out required shapes or shapes using a light fast film. The screen is coated with photo emulsion. When the image is placed onto the lightbox with the screen on top, weights are placed on top for good contact. The image is exposed to the light. Then the magic happens. The screen is sprayed with water thus revealing the image. Ie the cut out images block out the light having not been hardened by it. The screen is dried ready to print. This is repeated for every colour.

For this Artist in Focus Jane is mainly concentrating on showing her London images, some hard edged others more representational. She is including one screenprint from her Anglesey series which was accepted for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2020.

Images of her work can be seen on her website www.janestothert.com and Instagram .
