Lucy Cooper, Artist in Focus 28 September – 11 October 2026

Statement

Lucy Cooper specialises in limited edition fine art screenprints. Her prints are colourful and uplifting, exploring appealing yet sometimes unexpected combinations of colour and form to reinterpret familiar sights.

The screenprint process both informs and develops Lucy’s work, encouraging her to strip back and simplify the subject and to focus on the interplay of colour, shape and negative spaces. She is particularly drawn to the light and feel of sunny locations and to organic shapes found in nature. She presents scenes which evoke memories of much-loved places or objects, inviting viewers to be transported to the calm and warmth of sunny places or to be reminded of the beauty of familiar settings.

"I spend a good amount of time at the Stodmarsh Nature Reserve, close to Canterbury, in Kent. This reserve has the largest reed beds in the south-east of England and has a rich variety of wildlife, hosting a range of specialised birds. It is a sanctuary for migrating birds along with many swallows, as well as its many local inhabitants. To get to the reserve in summer, my walk there takes me through the hot fields and I just love the view of the long, undulating hills stretching off into the distance. It is a place I find I can draw a lot of inspiration and ideas from. This print had been playing in my head for some time before it made its way onto the plate."

Statement

My hand made screenprints are inspired by my encounters with wildlife and are a visual diary of the animals I’ve seen. My aim is to portray the characteristics of the creatures I’ve been so lucky to encounter. I’ve been sketching from nature since childhood and was encouraged by our grandad, who taught us the names of all the flora and fauna we saw. I still enjoy long walks – these days I’m on the lookout for potential subjects for my next screenprint!

I make sketches and take photos for reference and then work these up into detailed drawings. To create my final artwork I collage together my imagery created using a wide variety of mark making techniques. Each colour I want on the final print requires separate artwork to be prepared. I then transfer the artwork onto silkscreens to make stencils. The final stages involve screenprinting and sometimes monoprinting through the screen to get painterly effects. I hand print my images creating small, limited editions.
My screenprints have been selected to exhibit at the Royal Academy Summer exhibition, RBSA, Chelsea Arts Soc, amongst others.
