Thank you to all who visited and contributed to Okiki Akinfe’s exhibition, ‘RM9 5AN’, which closed on Saturday.

Throughout Okiki’s exhibition we hosted a series of free Talks, Events and Workshops, providing various entry points to engage in Okiki’s commission and wider work. These included:

▪️a conversation between Okiki and writer and art historian Alayo Akinkugbe
▪️a collage making workshop with Okiki and Peer Ambassadors
▪️Readings About... England, a literary event led by writer and editor Amelia Horgan
▪️‘Ordinary Miracle: We Were Always Part of the Landscape’ – a night of performance and Poetry with Black Geographies and a reading by Okiki
▪️a Community Coffee Morning with a tour by our Director, Ellen Greig
▪️and a celebratory closing event with the current cohort of Peer Ambassadors who shared new poetry and writing that they have been developing throughout Okiki’s exhibition 🌱🌱

Here are a few comments we heard from visitors about ‘RM9 5AN’ — “This is incredible, it feels like the high street is still alive”; “The paintings are gorgeous”; “It feels like home”.

Okiki spoke to Robert about her local highstreet in Dagenham, ‘Essex Girls’ and the changing landscape of local communities.

Today we are spending time in the garden reflecting on 9 years this month since the Grenfell Tower fire. On the ninth anniversary of the fire, we are thinking of all the victims, survivors, former residents, and everyone who has been impacted and affected.

These are the fuchsia French roses growing in Khadija’s Garden, Peer’s green space set up by artist Khadija Saye when she worked at Peer in 2017. The garden is now a memorial garden which we carefully look after in memory of her, her mother Mary, and the 72 people who were tragically killed in the Grenfell Tower fire on 14 June 2017.

We stand in solidarity with all who are still seeking justice.

Okiki Akinfe is featured in the new Summer issue of Frieze, discussing the inspiration behind her current exhibition at Peer with artist Peter Davies.

In an excerpt from the conversation, they discuss the importance of Essex as a site of inquiry in Okiki’s work:

“Peter Davies: You’ve spoken to me about the importance of Essex in your life and work, and how it’s London but not London.

Okiki Akinfe: It’s a funny duality. I moved to Rainham when I was young, which [used to be part of Essex and] is still so Essex in its own way. Historically, Rainham and Dagenham have been working-class areas, and Dagenham in particular had the Ford factory, which offered the promise of employment. That’s five minutes from where I live.
I think about Essex’s association with the reality television show ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ [2010-ongoing], but then also this promise of a place where the working class could thrive. It’s a diverse place. People are happy to talk about specific notions of Essex - what it means in relation to British identity. I only started thinking about this more because of having to explain to people in the art world where I’m from, or my experience”.

✨ Congratulations to Peer alumni Iris Touliatou and Tanoa Sasraku, who are both included in this year’s Glasgow International ✨

This year is the 11th iteration of Scotland’s biennial festival of contemporary art, and it runs from 5 to 21 June, across various locations throughout Glasgow.

Both Iris and Tanoa had shows at Peer back in 2023, find out more about these and other past shows through our website archive page, linked in bio.
