Peer is excited to release details of five unique artworks produced by Beirut and London-based artist, Dala Nasser, exclusively for Peer.

Cotton bedsheets, indigo dye, cyanotype, shells, seeds, ash and malachite
£2,500 each including VAT

Produced in parallel with her current Peer commission, ‘Cemetery of Martyrs’, each unique artwork uses material from Dala’s expanded painting installation of dyed and marked fabrics layered and draped over a wooden structure, repurposed to produce new compositions using collage.

Working with cuttings from single cotton bedsheets, these unique works include Dala’s use of cyanotype – a printing process that produces Prussian blue images using sunlight – to illustrate the names of various names in Arabic. While, black and green mourning fabrics dyed and marked with shells, seeds, ash and malachite represent the colour of paradise.

Generously produced and donated by Dala, all funds from the sales of these unique works will go towards sustaining Peer’s programme.

Peer Recommends the ‘British Art Show 10 — A Chorus of Strangers’ 💥

‘British Art Show 10’ opens today in Coventry, across Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry University, and the Mead Gallery, until 10 January 2027.

Included in the exhibition are Peer recent and current programme participants, artists Dala Nasser and Okiki Akinfe 🌟

Curated by writer and curator Ekow Eshun, this landmark exhibition provides a timely overview of the most exciting art produced in the UK over the past five years.

Edition highlight: Tanoa Sasraku ✨✨

In 2023, as part of Tanoa’s first solo exhibition in a London arts institution, Tanao produced ‘Scholar’s Rock’ — a scanned detail from her ‘Terratype’ series on Awagami Kozo paper. The edition explores her ongoing work with the symbolic properties of land and site, informed by a personal relationship to textiles and patternmaking.

Generously produced and donated by Tanoa, all funds from the sales of this edition will go towards sustaining Peer’s programme.

Congratulations to Tanoa, who is currently included in the Turner Prize 2026, an exhibition of work by four artists who have been nominated as finalists for the Turner Prize at MIMA in Middlesbrough until 29 March 2027.

Creating a collective space to gather and hold the voices and legacies of people who were steadfast in their commitment to freedom, ‘Cemetery of Martyrs’ is a graveyard to mourn, learn, and reaffirm the power of culture, art and humanity to connect us to histories of resistance and renewal.

⚒️ Peer is currently closed as we install our forthcoming exhibition, ‘Cemetery of Martyrs’, by Dala Nasser, opening next Friday, 18 September, 6 - 8pm. All are welcome!

For her exhibition at Peer, Dala layers black and green mourning fabrics that she has dyed and marked with earthen elements, such as shells, seeds, ash, and crushed malachite, amongst cyan blue and charcoal-marked fabrics. Charcoal rubbings transcribe the surfaces of known graves of seminal cultural figures from across Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Jordan, the UK and the US, while cyanotype treated fabrics act as a visual representation of those whose graves are unreachable or unknown, by featuring the person’s name transcribed in Arabic in various scales and legibility.

‘Cemetery of Martyrs’ is produced and commissioned by Nottingham Contemporary in collaboration with KM21 The Hague, Netherlands and Peer, London.

Thank you to all who visited and contributed to Okiki Akinfe’s exhibition, ‘RM9 5AN’, which closed on Saturday.

Throughout Okiki’s exhibition we hosted a series of free Talks, Events and Workshops, providing various entry points to engage in Okiki’s commission and wider work. These included:

▪️a conversation between Okiki and writer and art historian Alayo Akinkugbe
▪️a collage making workshop with Okiki and Peer Ambassadors
▪️Readings About... England, a literary event led by writer and editor Amelia Horgan
▪️‘Ordinary Miracle: We Were Always Part of the Landscape’ – a night of performance and Poetry with Black Geographies and a reading by Okiki
▪️a Community Coffee Morning with a tour by our Director, Ellen Greig
▪️and a celebratory closing event with the current cohort of Peer Ambassadors who shared new poetry and writing that they have been developing throughout Okiki’s exhibition 🌱🌱

Here are a few comments we heard from visitors about ‘RM9 5AN’ — “This is incredible, it feels like the high street is still alive”; “The paintings are gorgeous”; “It feels like home”.

Today we are spending time in the garden reflecting on 9 years this month since the Grenfell Tower fire. On the ninth anniversary of the fire, we are thinking of all the victims, survivors, former residents, and everyone who has been impacted and affected.

These are the fuchsia French roses growing in Khadija’s Garden, Peer’s green space set up by artist Khadija Saye when she worked at Peer in 2017. The garden is now a memorial garden which we carefully look after in memory of her, her mother Mary, and the 72 people who were tragically killed in the Grenfell Tower fire on 14 June 2017.

We stand in solidarity with all who are still seeking justice.

Okiki Akinfe is featured in the new Summer issue of Frieze, discussing the inspiration behind her current exhibition at Peer with artist Peter Davies.

In an excerpt from the conversation, they discuss the importance of Essex as a site of inquiry in Okiki’s work:

“Peter Davies: You’ve spoken to me about the importance of Essex in your life and work, and how it’s London but not London.

Okiki Akinfe: It’s a funny duality. I moved to Rainham when I was young, which [used to be part of Essex and] is still so Essex in its own way. Historically, Rainham and Dagenham have been working-class areas, and Dagenham in particular had the Ford factory, which offered the promise of employment. That’s five minutes from where I live.
I think about Essex’s association with the reality television show ‘The Only Way Is Essex’ [2010-ongoing], but then also this promise of a place where the working class could thrive. It’s a diverse place. People are happy to talk about specific notions of Essex - what it means in relation to British identity. I only started thinking about this more because of having to explain to people in the art world where I’m from, or my experience”.

✨ Congratulations to Peer alumni Iris Touliatou and Tanoa Sasraku, who are both included in this year’s Glasgow International ✨

This year is the 11th iteration of Scotland’s biennial festival of contemporary art, and it runs from 5 to 21 June, across various locations throughout Glasgow.
