Fishbourne Parish Council

We’re looking forward to working more with our local community in Fishbourne and are always open to ideas of how to take this forward.

It was great to see Melanie Marsh from Fishbourne Roman Palace at the Parish Council meeting tonight. She is looking to work with the PC to find ways to strengthen links with the community.
Did you know there will be a second hand book stall at the Roman Palace and that the cafe is open for visitors even if you don’t want to go round the museum part?

The Education Team here have been busy this afternoon sorting out crisp, biscuit and chocolate wrappers for our TerraCycle UK programme. These help us to raise funds for Sussex Archaeological Society, the registered charity we are part of, as well as preventing plastic waste going in landfill.

Voices at Fishbourne

When Fishbourne Roman Palace first opened to the public in the 1960s, we had an early audio visual video which introduced the site to visitors. This has since been updated to the one which visitors can currently see on a visit. However, due to the wonderful tech skills of one of our volunteers, the original video is back and is online to watch on our Youtube channel... Hope you all enjoy our retro film as much as we do! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YTXyJkT8jNQ&feature=youtu.be

Our original introduction video. Now a little bit dated.

We hosted the amazing Haestingas earlier this Summer and will be welcoming more re-enactors in August - follow us for more details!

We had the privilege of holding an event at Fishbourne Roman Palace this weekend gone. We were there to demonstrate to the public the similarities and differences between Roman and Saxon culture and technology.

We were able to demonstrate amongst other things, net making, oar making, wood carving, wheel making and tablet weaving.

A reconstruction of a boat burial was a fantastic way to engage the public; a huge ‘well done’ goes to our starring corpse who thankfully didn’t end up Well Done after laying in the sun! 😉

A very special highlight was a manuscript writing and illuminating display - really showcasing the talent of our society.

One of our Regia members @AlisonOffer captured some great shots for us!

The lectures are suitable for collectors, archaeologists, and those interested generally in the history of money. Fee: £12 (or the series of 3 lectures for £30. The other lectures will take place on Saturday 8th February: Greek and Celtic Coins; Saturday 21st March: Roman Coins). This/these event/s must be booked in advance: for more information or to book, please see www.rwc.org.uk or phone 01273 843026.

BOXGROVE REVISITED: myth or substance? by Mark Roberts, Principal Research Fellow, Institute of Archaeology, UCL. Thursday 18th October, 7pm. With the recent publication of the first volume in the next series of Boxgrove monographs, it is an apposite time for reflection upon the past, present and future of what is widely regarded as one of the most important and iconic Palaeolithic sites ever excavated. This lecture will cover the history of the discovery of the site, the excavations and post-excavation, as well as the many characters involved in the story. It will examine the successes and failures of the project as a whole and, leaving no stone unturned, examine what might have been undertaken differently, where the success of the project lay, and its lessons for Archaeology in general and the Palaeolithic in particular. Boxgrove is located near Chichester in West Sussex. Venue: University of Sussex, Fulton Building Lecture Theatre B. Time: 7-8.45pm. Entry to the lecture is free for University of Sussex students: £3 for US staff and members of the University of Sussex Archaeological Society; others: £4.
