#onthisday in 1824 Birdham, just outside Chichester, was a hive of activity. It was the location of a famous boxing match between Tom Spring, an Englishman and Jack Langan, an Irishman. This boxing match was to determine the “Champion of all England". It was a rematch following a bare-knuckle fight in Worcester, lasting more than seventy rounds and over 2 ½ hours with a crowd of over 30,000 people. Although bare-knuckle fighting was outlawed in 1750, the authorities often turned a blind eye to bouts.
This jug from our collections commemorates this famous boxing match.

Today is a day of remembrance and showing respect to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom! We have a selection of memorabilia from the Second World War but this is our collections officer Amy’s favourite. It is called the Selsey War Diary 1939-1945 and was written by a L.Harris to this day we do not know if there are any family members still local, but either way we pay our respects to him and all the other service men and women on this day. Thank you L.Harris for capturing your experience #dday #lestweforget #rememberthefallen #rememberanceday #localmuseum #localhistory

Our volunteer today is the wonderfully fascinating Crispin. Having had a very successful career in the museum world, Crispin then took the decision to go freelance and became one of the first museum & heritage consultants. Nowadays Crispin has a passion for writing and has had books published one being Religion & Museum. Crispin has been volunteering for an outstanding 13 years with the museum and loves “playing with the collections” he loves finding out where things come from, the history behind them and seeing if he can link it to the modern day #volunteerweek #museum #localmuseum #volunteerspirit #appreciation

It’s Volunteers Week! And we have lots of wonderful volunteers here at the museum. Their time is invaluable to us. Meet Ellen, originally from sunny California she was a librarian for 40 years. Ellen works 1 afternoon a week for us and transfers all our paper data into the online database. Ellen has lived in Chichester for nearly 2 years and remembers coming to the city in the 70’s when traffic used to flow around the market cross! She loves being at the museum as it has a good vibe and has fun meeting others. Ellen is our star baker 👩‍🍳 #volunteerweek #localmuseum #teamworkmakesthedreamwork #chichester

I'm sure rain would make the dig that much harder! Those Gladiators were savage!! Get down to Chichester and the Novium Museum this week to see what other activities are on for all ages to enjoy Roman Week

It wasn't that long ago that we posted about this item, but we couldn't resist sharing it once again. This fabulous rock bun is refuted to have been made in 1824, which if true would make it nearly 200 years old. It was said to have been carried around by the owner for good luck!

"The Novium Museum has an extensive archaeology collection, and one of my favourite objects is this Bronze Age biconical gold pendant found near Arundel. It is made of a single piece of gold strip wound spirally. The intricate and detailed nature of its design is incredibly impressive for something so small and delicate"

Amy Roberts Collections Officer
"As the museum’s Collections Officer I feel like I shouldn’t really have a favourite object, it would be like having a favourite child almost. The Novium really does have such a wonderful and very varied collection and it is very difficult to single out just one item. An object that really catches my attention however is this fascinating rock bun. It is refuted to have been made in 1824, which if true would make it nearly 200 years old which astonishes me. It was said to have been carried around by the owner for good luck! I’d love to know more about the person who made and owned this rock bun, but unfortunately it remains a bit of a mystery"

Today is international museum day and we have decided to sharewith you our favourite items within the museum. Starting things off is Steph, Museum Manager.....

‘When I walk into the museum I can’t help but be amazed by the Roman bath house. The baths would have covered around 5,500 square metres and been richly decorated. Bath houses were central to daily life in a Roman town. People came to meet friends, make business deals, exercise, be pampered, discuss politics, gossip, play board-games or simply to relax. Just think of the conversations that would have taken place here almost 2,000 years ago! The baths are also the reason the Novium Museum is located here and they allow us to share our Roman heritage with thousands of visitors every year’.
