Autumn in Art

Autumn is a season full of contrasts, and there’s so much for an artist to capture.

Mist hanging low over the fields, copper leaves catching the light, delicate dew on spiderwebs and mornings that seem to grow shorter by the day. Then, just when you think the palette is all muted browns and greys, the blue skies return and the hedgerows are laden with berries, hips and haws.

Buying greetings cards from artists is about much more than sending a message—it's a way of supporting creativity, craftsmanship, and independent businesses.

Should artists be asked to work to a brief?

It’s an interesting question…

When an artist is commissioned or invited to take part in an exhibition, is it reasonable to ask them to create work around a particular theme, colour palette or idea?

On one hand, a brief can provide a starting point and encourage an artist to explore something they might not otherwise have considered. It can also create a sense of connection and cohesion within an exhibition.

But does giving an artist a brief risk limiting their creativity?

Artists often have their own ideas, influences, processes and ways of working. Sometimes their best work comes when they’re given the freedom to follow their own path rather than being asked to fit within someone else’s parameters.

And perhaps there’s something rather exciting about putting together an exhibition where every artist has followed their own creative instincts — and seeing how those very different approaches work alongside each other.

A warm welcome to Isabel Hurley she will be our guest Artist, for the next four weeks. 28th September - 26th October.

Isabel Hurley paints the places and moments that catch her attention, inviting viewers to connect with the atmosphere of a scene or recall their own memories. Living in Hampshire, she is inspired by the coast and countryside, particularly the effects of light, weather, water and the way people inhabit a landscape.

Working from drawings and photographs, Isabel builds her paintings through layers of acrylic, always beginning with a red ground. She primarily uses a limited palette of six colours, creating depth and a surprising range of colour. Expressive mark-making is central to her work, using brushes, palette knives, scrapers, cloths, rollers, spray bottles and even her hands to apply and remove paint.

Mostly self-taught, Isabel has painted throughout her life and changed career over fourteen years ago to focus on creative work. Alongside her own practice, she teaches art to adults and children, with a particular passion for making art accessible and meaningful to people of all ages and abilities.

GUESS WHAT THIS TOOL IS FOR

Artisans use a whole host of tools and equipment to create their work. Some are highly specialised, designed for a particular craft, while others are much more unexpected — clever uses of everyday objects or tools that you’d never imagine had a place in an artist’s studio!

Behind every finished piece there’s often a story of how it was made, and sometimes the tools involved are just as fascinating as the finished work.

So we thought we’d have a little fun…
