We are looking forward to the next big event at Stow - the hugely popular Large Model Air Show on Saturday 12 September. You will see aircraft from biplanes through to jets going through their paces above the Aerodrome, but these amazing craft are all piloted from the ground. And when we say "Large" we mean it - some of these models are the size of family cars! The night of 2-3 September 1916 marked a turning point in the war against airships, when a new type of incendiary and explosive bullet brought one down in flames. Lieutenant William Leefe Robinson of the Royal Flying Corps shot at SL 11, a wooden-framed Schütte-Lanz similar to a Zeppelin, over Cuffley. The hydrogen ignited and turned the airship into a fireball, killing all 16 crew. Lt Robinson received the fastest Victoria Cross ever rewarded, and the only VC for action in Britain, just 48 hours after the event. Embarrassed by his new-found fame, Robinson requested a transfer to the front lines where, on his first patrol, he was shot down by the Red Baron. Months in solitary confinement as a prisoner of war weakened his health and he died of Spanish flu in December 1918, aged 23
