The colored drawings by Katrin von Lehmann are partially overlaid with perforated sheets.

While the automated management reveals the artistic recourse to scientifically exact methods, their permanence is contrastingly broken by the fragile perforation.

Kang Contemporary is featured in Kunst in Berlin Spaziergänge zu Kunstwerken, Galerien und Museen by Gerhard Drexler. We are honored to be a part of this community.

Using an intuitive mixed technique of watercolor, colored pencil and graphite, he allows figurative abstractions to emerge from explorations rich in color and form. MASCH constantly challenges the texture of the paper by superimposing his applications, which he applies rapidly using various means.

Frank Coldewey's paper-based architectural structures secure their seemingly improvised state in an extremely fragile manner. Exposed to gravity, they are the more unprotected, but at the same time gain a kind of material stubbornness.

Vemo Hang's work appears against the backdrop of a life in motion and is shaped by impressions she has gathered during periods of her life in China, Japan, the USA, Germany and Switzerland. As an archaeologist, field researcher, analyst and artist, she adopts a variety of positions to reflect on the complexity of organic materiality and landscape.
In her sculptural paintings, she synthesizes knowledge and sensuality by physically spatializing and sculpturally embodying virtuality. In them, thoughts are carried by an atmosphere that creates points of reference for a spiritual-spatial search movement.

Tatjana Schülke´s structures and collages are based on regulative, structuring and space-filling ideas. Marked by lightness and a certain fragility they want to be looked at, wondered at, understood intuitively in the sense of a haptic understanding.

OPENING Friday 17 November, 18:00

Kang Contemporary is pleased to present Serendipity: Art (mostly) on Paper with artworks by
Frank Coldewey, Katrin von Lehmann, Lisa Glauer, Masch, Tatjana Schülke and Vemo Hang.

If science can be described as a system that provokes significant coincidences, serendipity is the mode of epistemic discoveries par excellence - from the positive effect of penicillin on humans to nylon stockings to decalcomania. For our artists the concept of serendipity thus serves as an approach of a creativity that proceeds in a roundabout way. It is precisely the form of open-ended creating that makes complex constructions of meaning based on random impulses possible in the creative process in the sense of a theory of inverse expediency. Especially during digitalization, where the casual snatching of events and facts is gaining in importance, an investigation of serendipitous practices from an artistic perspective is particularly interesting regarding their epistemic qualities.

LAST CALL: Threading Lines

This is the last week to view THREADING LINES, which showcases the artworks of Jeongmoon Choi and Annette Cords. The exhibition will remain on display until Saturday 11 November. Be sure not to miss the chance to immerse yourself in the exhibition.

Like a spider spins a network of strings, the artist Jeongmoon Choi composes installations that oscillate between the fragility of a singular yarn and the beaming force of the collective composition.

The puzzling invocations of Candy Hearts in Annette Cords' tapestries are interrupted by graffiti and image clusters. The visual and tactile collages evoke the aesthetic language of layered and disconnected cityscapes.

THREADS Material – Myths – Symbols: Jeongmoon Choi exhibits at Draiflessen Collection, Mettingen

15 October - 25 February 2024

"THREADS thus brings together works by contemporary women artists, along with exemplary spinning utensils, and graphics with motifs from select Greco-Roman myths. These works, deliberately gathered from different contexts and categories, are “interlaced” in such a way that they offer visitors—to continue this train of thought—numerous connecting threads, enabling them to engage with the use and meaning of thread as a symbol of personal and social narratives. Conceptual and associative spaces open up between the poles of fate and responsibility, trust and skepticism, individuality and collectivity, and power and powerlessness. The exhibition thus builds bridges from antiquity through the present into a possible tomorrow."

We're glad to announce Jazoo Yang Jazoo Yang will be participating in Flickering Shores, Sea Imaginaries hosted by Busan Biennale from 14 October till 19 November. Busan Biennale

" Art has engaged with the sea for a long time; as a source of creativity, inspiration and desire, but also expressing darkness, despair, as well as socio-political and environmental anxieties. Bringing together artists, scholars, marine researchers, coastal communities and visitors, this year’s Sea Art Festival invites us to focus on different stories about the sea, symbiosis, cooperation and resistance rather than profit and consumerism. It draws links on the realities of coastal communities across the world in the face of climate change, and encourages us to pause and acknowledge the value of the sea, activating dialogue and creative exchange"

Upcoming | Jazoo Yang participates Gangneung International Art Festival 2023 from 26 September to 29 October 2023

Jazoo Yang hunts for materials in construction zones, parks, and old buildings, then preserves them in resin. Her art recalls vanished buildings and neighborhoods, showing city life's drastic changes. From chaos, she creates abstract color and shape compositions. In an era of rapid gentrification, her medium goes beyond mere paint on canvas.

During Berlin Art Week, Kang Contemporary is delighted to present THREADING LINES, showcasing the artworks of Jeongmoon Choi and Annette Cords.

Annette Cords' tapestries translate the complexities of urban landscapes into woven narratives, seamlessly fusing billboards, street art, and advertisements into abstract designs.

Jeongmoon Choi's installations, where resonating strings dance between fragility and durability, weaving illusions of architectural dimensions with mere threads.

Step into the mesmerizing world of Sojin Park's artistry, where intricately woven threads and lines form enchanting faces from afar, and entangled knots and parting fibers reveal their beauty up close. Delving into the depths of human existence, Park's work blurs the boundaries between the internal and external, leaving us captivated by the interplay of perception and expression. Explore a realm of ethereal beings, non-binary creatures, and nature gods, as her art offers a glimpse into new cultural horizons and ignites the imagination. Embrace the hidden inner worlds and marvel at the diversity found in the spaces between "you" and "I" within Park's awe-inspiring collection.

“When memory is refreshed again and again, it enriches the soul with a mass of details that distract recollection.”
- Søren Kierkegaard

In Arnold Dreyblatt’s artwork “Retrospect” the artist uses an excerpts from Søren Kierkegaard's “Preface” to “Stages on Life’s Way” (1845) to question the readability of memories. The text streams across the white background and navigates the eye effortlessly. However, it seems impossible to understand and make sense of what is written until one realizes that Kierkegaard’s essay about memory and recollection is printed backwards, from the bottom upwards. Dreyblatt’s artwork reflects the mind’s attempt to access fragmented memories, in which visual and temporal perspectives often collide.

In addition to the large textual paper installations and the lenticular artwork displayed in the main room, the upper level of the gallery showcases the digital installation Inventar/Inventur. With this Dreyblatt dives into the sea of information that are the records of the 1938 auction of the entire estate of Berhard Altmann’s Vienna villa. Taking on the inventory becomes a much larger task in which one has to combat storytelling that prioritizes data over people.

Ways we remember history, collect memories and hold on to information is a reflection of the present more than a representation of the past. If the past and present seep into each, how does one reinvent the inventory as a record of past lives? The artworks in the exhibition INVENTORIES confront the reproduction of a past that has been observed through singular perspectives and told with condensed words.

We are pleased to share a sneak peek of the upcoming exhibition INVENTORIES with Arnold Dreyblatt. Kang Contemporary invites you to join us for the Opening on Friday at 18:00.

KANG Contemporary is pleased to present the exhibition INVENTORIES with Arnold Dreyblatt, which showcases recent and rarely exhibited works. The artist engages with categories of intertextuality, recollection and archival storage in complex textual and spatial visualizations. New lenticular and glass display cases reference crises of Europe in texts by historical and recent visionaries and critics. These important historical themes are illustrated to visitors through new media and means of technology. The exhibition INVENTORIES is thus intended to create a space in which these themes, guided by the artist's works, can be reflected upon and discussed by the public.

Friendly invitation! We are pleased to invite you to our new exhibition INVENTORIES Berlin based New York multidisciplinary artist Arnold Dreyblatt. Please join us at the opening on Friday, 21st of April from 18:00.

Arnold Dreyblatt interrogates ways of remembering and the archive as a space. In his installations of information and text he poses the question of how information and stories are told, saved and erased and why certain information persists over others. As the mind attempts to focus, isolate or connect the textual fragments in the exhibition they stand as a union that lifts these components taken from documents, records, and inventories into a metaphorical sphere.

We are delighted to announce that Kang Contemporary will be participating in Paper Positions Berlin 2023 with the artists Frank Coldewey and Katrin von Lehmann. We hope to welcome you there from the 27 - 30 of April 2023.

Katrin von Lehmann and Frank Coldewey explore paper and demonstrate in their works the enormous versatility of the medium, ranging from delicate fragility to robust permanence. Together, the two artists create a space in which paper itself is the subject of exploration and not just a medium that conveys secondary meaning. By perforating, weaving and assembling, Katrin von Lehmann and Frank Coldewey show the versatility as well as the creative and emotional potential of this classic medium.

The ceramics enter a reciprocal dialogue with the artist's paintings. Hopp interrogates the medium of painting and develops his own methods and styles. In his current series, his paintings cite the animation of the early 2000s in which two-dimensional panels were combined to create digital shapes. Thereby, the paintings emulate another crucial progression in creating images; it resembles the aesthetics of Cubism and Futurism.
