Last days to visit Pedro Cabrita Reis’ first solo exhibition with the gallery, on view at Buchmann Berlin until July 27, 2024

The exhibition, Wunderkammer, brings together a broad selection of works by Pedro Cabrita Reis from recent years: Objects made from found materials that refer to inhabited and uninhabited spaces; white earthenware sculptures that speak of the forces to which the clay has been subjected; paintings on both canvas and paper that seek to be understood as explorations of the medium itself; and figurative paintings in which complex emotionalities are negotiated. Three large sculptures made of aluminum profiles complement this lavish exhibition.

The large aluminum sculptures refer to imaginary cities and natural growth. The exhibition emphasizes the various aspects of the artist’s painterly work, showing works on canvas from the series “Landscapes”, “The dark self-portraits”, and the sublime works in oil on paper from “Considerations on the Landscape”.

Pedro Cabrita Reis (born 1956 in Lisbon, Portugal) is one of the leading visual artists of his generation and one of Portugal’s most internationally recognized artists. The artist’s multifaceted works in a variety of media have a haunting presence and poetic power and are represented in the collections of many important national and international museums, including Tate Modern in London, the Gulbenkian in Lisbon, the Arts Club of Chicago, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Serralves Museum in Porto, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) in Lisbon, S.M.A.K. in Ghent, Centre Pompidou in Paris, IVAM in Valencia, CAC in Málaga, Kunst Museum Winterthur in Switzerland, the Jumex Collection in Mexico City, the Ontario Art Gallery in Toronto and the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid.

with Bettina Pousttchi and Sabine Schaschl

Guided Tour of the exhibition "Progressions" with the artist Bettina Pousttchi and the Sabine Schaschl.

The exhibition is a selection of sculptural and photographic works, as well as ceramics. With purposeful interventions, the artist transforms the industrially produced source materials that many of her sculptures are made from. Conceptually linked to minimal art and the ready-made, her large- and small-format artworks enter into a fascinating relationship with the museum architecture.

Participation is included in museum admission.
No registration needed.

Opening today!

Saturday, 24.02.2024 5-7 pm

We are delighted to invite you to the opening of the exhibition Sculpture by Tony Cragg, featuring four large-format sculptures from the artist’s key series of works from recent years: Runner, It is, it isn’t, Early Forms and Lost in Thought.

In making apparent how clearly the individual series of works by the British sculptor differ from one another, these four exemplary sculptures thereby reveal the artist’s impressive sculptural diversity. With their strong physical presence, the sculptures bring the exhibition space to life, speaking directly to the viewer on both an emotional and physical level. Through the presentation of these large-format works, Cragg’s complex sculptural investigations into the relationship between body, material, object and space can also thus be experienced physically.

Pedro Cabrita Reis joins the Buchmann Galerie

Buchmann Galerie is delighted to announce its representation of Pedro Cabrita Reis.

Working across a wide range of media, from drawing and painting to sculpture, Pedro Cabrita Reis’ multifaceted oeuvre has a haunting presence and poetic narrative. It is characterized by a captivating clarity that is due to the simple and basic, often found materials he uses, such as steel, concrete, glass, neon light or wood.
The artist’s sensibility for our complex relationship with the environment, for the fractures and peripheries of our utilitarian society, is brought to the fore in his oeuvre. Materials like the remains of building rubble or disused doors and windows for the sculptural work, and the figures in their solitude and the utopian landscapes in the recent oil paintings, get a new dignity and meaning. Intertwined in various groups of works, Pedro Cabrita Reis intellectually, sculpturally and emotionally creates and opens up new spaces.

Pedro Cabrita Reis (b. 1956 in Lisbon, Portugal) is a foremost visual artist of his generation and one of Portugal’s most internationally renowned artists.

He represented Portugal at the 50th Venice Biennale (2003) and participated at the 55th Venice Biennale (2013). His work was presented at the 10th Biennale de Lyon (2009), the 21st and 24th São Paulo Biennales (1994, 1998) and documenta IX in Kassel (1992).

Public artworks by Pedro Cabrita Reis include the monumental sculpture Central Tejo in Lisbon (2018). His works are featured in the collections of many prominent museums, including Tate Modern in London, the Gulbenkian in Lisbon, The Arts Club of Chicago, the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Serralves Museum in Porto, the Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology (MAAT) in Lisbon, S.M.A.K. in Ghent, Centre Pompidou in Paris, IVAM in Valencia, Kunst Museum Winterthur in Switzerland, the Jumex Collection in Mexico City, the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid.

The Buchmann Galerie will present the artist in the gallery’s first solo exhibition, opening on the occasion of the Gallery Weekend Berlin on 26 – 28 April 2024.

Bettina Pousttchi — World Time Clock

Aurora Museum Shanghai
17 November – 18 December 2023

During the Shanghai Art Season, Aurora Museum Shanghai has the honor of inviting the renowned German artist Bettina Pousttchi to present her World Time Clock series.

The monumental work World Time Clock consists of 24 photographs, each depicting a public clock showing the time of 1:55 PM in a different city. Bettina Pousttchi began this series in 2008, traveling the globe to photograph public clocks in cities around the world. The act of visiting various places forms a fundamental part of the conceptual artwork. To realize this endeavor, the artist visited numerous cities worldwide, including Anchorage, Auckland, Sydney, Shanghai, Vladivostok, Seoul, Rio de Janeiro, Tashkent, New Delhi, and Yangon, among others. Beyond a few individual trips, the artist circumnavigated the globe twice in one journey, visiting eight different places within 27 days.

The black and white appearance of the photographs harmonizes perfectly with the unique architectural language of Tadao Ando. World Time Clock was first shown as a full circle installation at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington D.C., in 2016 – 17. The series was shown a second time at the Berlinische Galerie, Museum für Moderne Kunst, Berlin in 2019 – 20. The World Time Clock exhibition at the Shanghai Aurora Museum will be the first presentation of this widely recognized work in both China and across Asia.
