carlier | gebauer

carlier | gebauer Founded in 1991 by Ulrich Gebauer and co-directed with Marie-Blanche Carlier since 1997, the gallery aims to promote international contemporary art.

Its program reveals an affinity towards aesthetic and conceptual research which indicates formulations of political awareness in the fields of installation and in the image, through film, photography, painting and drawing. Rather than following a specific theoretical theme, the gallery offers its artists a platform on which to experiment. This allows for a broad spectrum of sometimes antinomical v

iewpoints to be displayed. In this sense, each show is conceived with its own criteria, without making reference to previous exhibitions. The ample exhibition space allows the gallery to show large-scale installations in a museum like setting. This allows for new exhibition ideas to be conceived. In an ongoing interest in young artists the gallery regularly opens its program to poignant statements in the series of exhibitions entitled "ticker". Site specific installations as well as specific projects in collaboration with other galleries within this framework, seeks to broaden this approach, hence becoming mature statements. A great number of the artists of the gallery have participated in major biennials and international exhibitions as well as having significant solo exhibitions in major international museums.

“Every pigment has a particular behaviour once it binds with oil. I respect the nature of each mineral and the role that it plays on the canvas.” – Paolo Salvador

Central to .salvador’s practice is a deeply tactile and intuitive approach to painting. Combining traditional painting techniques with experimental material processes, he works with clay-based pigments, natural resins, and handwoven textiles to create living surfaces shaped through rhythm, gesture, and the physicality of the materials.

Drawing on mythologies, oral traditions, ancestral histories, and the biodiversity of the Amazon and Andes, his works unfold as shifting spaces where body, landscape, spirit, and ecology remain fluid. Naked figures, spectral animals, and saturated fields of colour suggest unstable relationships between humans, animals, and symbolic forms.

Paolo Salvador’s solo exhibition at carlier | gebauer, Madrid, is on view until 25 July.

Now on view at carlier | gebauer, Madrid: new solo exhibitions by and .salvador, both on view through Saturday, 25 July.

In his first solo exhibition with the gallery, Salvador’s paintings fuse Peruvian cosmology, personal memory, and material experimentation into immersive worlds where humans, animals, and nature exist in a state of continuous becoming.

Diaz Morales’ solo exhibition ‘The Shadow Out of Time’ borrows its title from H.P. Lovecraft’s story of consciousness displaced across aeons, the exhibition reimagines the shadow not as a monster, but as the faint, persistent signal of a world that has ceased to be — a parallel reality or shifted timeline in which a world has quietly vanished elsewhere.

Despite being deeply rooted in scholarly research, the work of Leonor Serrano Rivas appears imbued by interpretation and free association, concatenating thoughts with a non-logical reading of things and themes. Dream logic is used to present layered sensorial environments where the viewer must forget the narrative impulse.

’ exhibitions reimagine a distressed reality as a theatre set-like realm of imagination and fiction, with artworks acting as mediators and instruments calibrating and measuring this new cosmos.

Serrano Rivas’ work is currently on view in our solo presentation at , booth G07. Follow the link in bio for more information about the works shown.

carlier | gebauer is pleased to announce that is invited to the 61st International Art Exhibition di Venezia, curated by Koyo Kouoh.

Titled “In Minor Keys,” the exhibition will run from May 9 to November 22, 2026 in Venice, Italy.

“The minor keys are also the small islands, worlds amid oceans with distinct and endlessly rich ecosystems, social lives that are articulated, for better and worse, within much larger political forms and ecological stakes. Here, the evocation of the key and the island extends to an archipelago of oases: gardens, courtyards, compounds, lofts, dance floors - the other worlds that artists make, the intimate and convivial universes that refresh and sustain even in terrible times; indeed, especially in terrible times.” – Koyo Kouoh

Denniston Hill is an artist residency founded by artists Julie Mehretu () and Paul Pfeiffer () and architect Lawrence Chua in 2004, located inside 220 acres of land traditionally tended by the Esopus people of the Lenapehoking, now known as the southern Catskill mountains in Sullivan County, New York.

Opening on Saturday, 28 February, 12 – 3 pm, at carlier | gebauer, Madrid!

OPENING SOON! Join us for the opening ‘of Speak, Memory,’ Diego Delas () first solo exhibition with the gallery.

Opening on Saturday, 28 February, 12 – 3 pm, at carlier | gebauer, Madrid!

Expanding on recent research and bodies of work, ‘Speak, Memory’ explores the memory of vernacular culture in Spain, looking into the virtually lost practice of domestic amulet making. Featuring large, suspended pieces, the exhibition reconfigures the gallery space into a playful scenario echoing a stage-like theatre of sorts, to engage with the challenging times we are living in.
