Meet our current on-line artist Belén Benavent BELÉN BENAVENT CORTÉS

The artist’s practice is rooted in direct observation and immersion in places that often remain outside everyday visibility. Through painting, they explore how people live, work, and shape their daily lives in environments marked by inequality, while also reflecting the richness and complexity of everyday experience. Colour and light are central to the artist’s work, allowing lived experiences to be transformed into images that reveal the dignity and humanity present within these spaces. Through painting, the artist seeks to bring viewers closer to realities that often remain unseen and to emphasize the possibility of finding moments of light and resilience within difficult circumstances.

The artist’s project marks a return to La Cañada Real in Madrid, Europe’s largest informal settlement and a territory central to their socially engaged practice. Having previously explored the realities of Sector 6—an area profoundly affected by drug trafficking and institutional neglect—and created a mural in Sector 4, the artist is now focusing on community-based work with local mothers, children, and young people. Rather than approaching the project with a predetermined outcome, this online residency provides a framework for continued field research and exchange. By strengthening community relationships, the project prioritizes ethical dialogue as a means of shaping the final artistic intervention.

Meet our current on-site artist Lauren May laurenspecies
Lauren May is an artist from New Zealand. Her practice spans painting and sculpture, working with materials that possess an innate bodily quality and poetic resonance: mold making, ceramics, resin, silicon, and polymer clay, and intricate oil painting.
Within the work, she extracts the strange symbolic forms and dreamlike logic of fairy tale narratives, encrusted with imagery, motifs, and symbols dragged up from a human collective unconscious. Mining this material, in order to locate a portal, a wound in reality, a conduit for the weird.
Beauty and seduction, a bodily transcendence, held against an undercurrent of abjection. The work employs elaborate, ornate hyperreality that tips into an uncanny verisimilitude.

Meet our current on-site artist Xuecong Wang Xuecong Wang

The artist’s practice examines how perception shapes reality. While the world we see and experience is often accepted as reality itself, shifts in scale and perspective can reveal entirely different ways of understanding the world.

Working across painting, installation, immersive theatre, moving image, and virtual environments, the artist creates situations that move between different scales, perspectives, and temporalities. Through hybrid forms and spatial experiences, the work explores how realities emerge through perception, suggesting that what is understood as reality may be only one of many possible ways of experiencing and interpreting the world.

During the residency at GlogauAIR, the artist will develop new installation and performative works that investigate the relationship between perception and reality. They are currently experimenting with structures in which images and moving images can only be viewed through small openings or restricted viewpoints. Through these spatial arrangements, the artist examines how our understanding of the world is shaped by partial and selective forms of perception. Combining drawing, installation, moving image, and performance, they will create environments that invite viewers to encounter fragmented scenes through movement and shifting perspectives. The project explores how different conditions of perception can produce distinct experiences of the same world.

Meet our current on-line artist Rox Vazquez

Rox Vazquez’s practice brings together material research, speculative fiction and sculptural installation. Drawing on methodologies of world-building and natural history display, she constructs fictional organisms and systems of evidence that blur the boundaries between observation and invention. Through silicone casting, 3D modeling, printing and sensing technologies, her work investigates how material fictions shape our perception of living systems, using objects as vehicles for speculation, observation and the construction of imagined biology, inviting new forms of attention toward living systems.

“Unseen Specimens” is an installation developed in collaboration with natural history museums. The project engages directly with non-exhibited specimens held in museum archives objects that remain outside public display. Working with collection teams, the artist accesses archival holdings as the starting point for a process of translation into sculptural form. Through 3D scanning, mold-making, and silicone casting, they develop translucent fictional organisms whose morphologies are derived from real specimens, transformed into sculptural forms, and reintroduced into public space as speculative organisms.

During the GlogauAIR residency, the artist aims to expand their on-site research, deepen their engagement with archival practices, and develop an installation system that responds to the structures of display, storage, and institutional knowledge production.

Meet our current on-line artist Ginebra
Ginebra is a visual artist and poet who expresses herself through symbols, colours, and geometry. Her practice reflects the intersection of Craftsmanship and Fine Arts, characteristics attributed to her mestiza identity. The artist is interested in finding a metaphysical balance that gives meaning to the clash of the opposing forces. Her work is presented as conceptual, with a political and socioeconomic focus according to the culture and time the artwork is developing itself.
In recent years, the artist has lived in several cities across America and Europe, developing an understanding of how social systems function through political, economic, and cultural structures. Their practice reflects on the contradictions of contemporary society: while narratives of progress often suggest that the world is improving, there remain communities whose realities exist beyond dominant frameworks of understanding.
Over the past year, the artist has lived in a small town in Ecuador shaped by Venezuelan migration, where they have developed close relationships with individuals living under vulnerable and challenging circumstances. Through these encounters, the artist has engaged with the experiences of people affected by histories of colonialism, displacement, exploitation, and social inequality—individuals whose lives have been shaped by political and economic forces while navigating new forms of marginalization within contemporary social hierarchies.
Divine Trash is the title of the project the artist will develop during the residency. Through this work, they seek to honour the lives of those who carry the scars of human struggles, recognizing the resilience, dignity, and complexity of people who exist at the margins of dominant social narratives.
