Meet our current on-site artist fharidlatorre
Fharid LaTorre’s practice explores the beginning point of fracturing, where rupture, healing, and regeneration coexist, approaching the body as a fluid construction shaped by the encounter between intimate experience and collective structures. Working through materially driven forms informed by medical and industrial systems, he employs carved wood, cast and sintered metal, and apparatuses of his own invention to examine the body as a porous site, the thin line between support and restraint, and the mutations that emerge outside individual control. Informed by an attention to infrastructures that interpenetrate human life at both massive and molecular scales, his work considers moments of capture and the (non)consensual illusions that stabilize them, often by repurposing tools and systems beyond their intended use. Across these forms, the body becomes a site where territory, time, and social experience converge, and where these relationships can be inhabited, staged, and transformed.
During the residency at GlogauAIR, the artist will develop a new series of wall-mounted works that investigate the relationship between light, visibility, and the consequences of exposure. They are currently experimenting with objects that conceal as much as they reveal, in which an image surfaces only under certain conditions and recedes under all others. Through these arrangements, the artist examines what a viewer is permitted to see, and what seeing costs. Combining sculpture, moving image, and light, they will create works that withhold themselves until the viewer finds their place. Sight becomes conditional, granted by position rather than by right.
