BUCHSTABENMUSEUM Bewahrung und Dokumentation von Buchstaben
//
Preservation and Documentation of Letters
(1)

The Museum of Letters is devoted to preserving and documenting letterforms. Hundreds of signs have already been rescued from decay and the scrap heap. Typographic elements are selected independently of culture, region, language and script system.

The Berlin »Ostbahnhof« letters are heading back.

On August 10, 2020, a set of original letters came to us as a loan.Letters that once hung at what is now the Ostbahnhof, spelling out a station name that shifted alongside the city's own history.
When the station was renamed from »Hauptbahnhof« to »Ostbahnhof«, only the first four letters were changed. That is how the letters »H, A, U, P« came to be in our collection.

With the Buchstabenmuseum now closed, they have returned to their owner.
Thank you !

What a birthday surprise!
Today, on our birthday, we got final go of the funding for our move to store the collection!

The collection and the Buchstabenmuseum Association will continue to be run and maintained. However, the museum itself is closed to the public from October 2025.

The »AEG« sign is heading back.
On March 1, 2011, it came to us as a loan from Deutsches Technikmuseum.
Its story begins on May 19, 1999, when the »AEG« headquarters on Frankfurt's Main riverbank was demolished after more than forty years. Before the building came down, the letters were carefully removed.
In 1997, both the company archive and the façade lettering had been handed over to the Deutsches Technikmuseum for preservation.
With the Buchstabenmuseum now closed, it has returned.
A piece of German industrial history, back where it belongs.

Thank you Deutsches Technikmuseum !

The »Beate Uhse« sign is heading back.

On October 18, 2021, it came to us as a loan and became part of our exhibition »Final Sale – vom Kaufhaus ins Museum«
An exhibition dedicated to lettering and signage from retail spaces that no longer exist.

With the Buchstabenmuseum now closed, the sign has returned to its owner.
We’re grateful it was part of our collection, even if only for a while.

Thanks to !
