📣History lesson coming up📣
Let's celebrate the couragous people🇹🇷 who came to Germany to make a better life for them selves. And ended up making a better Germany🎇
It's 1961, the economy of West Germany is booming and the country is screaming for workers to keep up with industry demands. A deal with the government in Ankara ensures that Turkish workers can come for two years to work in Germany and then return. On arrival the Turks are called "guest workers". It turns out, neither the industry nor many of the workers are interested in going back. The workers stay, many bring their families and the rest is history.
Today, 60 years later, more than 3,5 million people of Turkish descent live in Germany. Their stories tells of hardship, racism, love and success. At the Dönermuseum, we celebrate those first pioneers and their following generations for contributing to the German society and on the way, introducing their food and thus revolutionizing the way Germans eat and how German food is perceived around the world.
Thank you for coming. Thank you for staying.
