We are honoured to have Brody join our community and share his creativity, knowledge, and artistic vision throughout his residency.

The Artist in Residence Program provides a unique opportunity for artists to connect with the land, culture, history, and community that make Wanuskewin so special. We look forward to supporting Brody as he explores, creates, and engages with visitors, staff, and community members during his time with us.

This is an important day to gather and connect to culture, community, and the land while remembering the survivors of residential schools and the children who never returned home.

🎬 A story of identity. Resilience. Culture. And the ongoing impacts of colonialism.

This National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, join us at Wanuskewin for a special screening of the award-winning documentary I Am Gitxsan, followed by a Q&A with the film’s director, Hossein Martin Fazeli.

The documentary follows Phoenix Apperloo, a recent high school graduate reconnecting with his Indigenous heritage in Hazelton, B.C., while exploring the experiences, resilience and ongoing advocacy of the Gitxsan community.

🌿 From plant to fibre, from fibre to cordage, and eventually, to a net.

Stinging nettle may be best known for the sting it can leave behind, but this remarkable plant has another quality: its stems contain strong, durable fibres that can be processed and transformed into cordage.

Recently, artists and community members gathered at Wanuskewin to harvest stinging nettle growing on the land. With care and intention, the plants were picked, flattened and prepared for drying, beginning a process that will turn these natural fibres into strands for weaving.

The longer-term goal is to use the cordage as part of a collectively woven net for traditional-style fishing, as part of an installation at Remai Modern.

The harvest was part of a knowledge-sharing project with Swedish artist collective Kultivator bringing people together to explore relationships between plants, land, water and making.

It is a beautiful example of land-based learning in action: looking closely at what grows around us, learning what it can provide, and carrying that knowledge forward. 🌱
