Canada has a very specific aviation problem. Enormous distances, almost no runways, and communities reachable only by air. ✈️

De Havilland Canada built aircraft for exactly that, and in 1965 they flew the DHC-6 Twin Otter.

It is not fast and it is not elegant. What it does is get in and out of places nothing else can manage. Wheels, skis or floats. Airborne in a few hundred metres. Gravel strips, ice runways, short mountain fields.

It ended up everywhere. Arctic communities, Antarctic research stations, island hops across the Caribbean, humanitarian work in Africa, and the tiny strip at Saba that is often called the shortest commercial runway in the world.

Production ended in 1988. Then the orders kept coming, and a British Columbia company bought the rights and restarted the line. 🤍

Sixty years on, you can still buy a new one.

You don't need a university or college degree or any previous work experience, as paid training is provided. Training takes 12 to 27 months depending on the role, with trainees earning around $60,000 while they learn.

When Chresten Wilson was 12 years old, she drove past United Airlines’ training centre in Denver with her mum and said: “I’ll be there someday.”

At the time, she had never even been on an aeroplane.

More than four decades later, she ended up at the very top of United’s pilot seniority list.

Wilson joined United 41 years ago as a DC-10 flight engineer before moving through the Boeing 737, 747, 757 and 767. She later became a captain on the 737, Airbus A320, 747 and 777 before flying the Boeing 787 on long-haul routes.

On May 26, 2026, after the pilots ahead of her retired, Wilson became United’s No. 1 most senior pilot out of more than 18,000 pilots, making her the first woman in the airline’s history to hold the position.

And at an airline, seniority matters.

It can determine everything from which aircraft a pilot flies to the routes and schedules they can choose. After 41 years, Wilson had effectively worked her way to the very top of that system.

She never set out to make history.

She just wanted to fly.

“When I started, I just wanted to fly and I didn’t ever think that I would be number one.”
