Diefenbaker Canada Centre

Diefenbaker Canada Centre The Diefenbaker Canada Centre proudly hosts a wide variety of exhibits and education programs designed to appeal to audiences of all ages.

Please visit our website to learn more about all that the DCC has to offer! During his service to this country and its people, the Right Honourable John G. Diefenbaker dreamed of a creating a united Canada, one which would find strength in diversity, and people in every region would share in prosperity. We believe in and continue to support his goal of a united country—one that celebrates and supp

orts all races, colours, religions, genders, gender identities or expressions, sexual orientations, national origins, disabilities, and ages—by welcoming all to the centre. The Diefenbaker Canada Centre’s (DCC) mandate is to help people make meaningful and personal connections to the ideas of citizenship, leadership, and Canada’s role in the international community. In addition to preserving and interpreting the core collection of personal artifacts bequeathed by Mr. Diefenbaker to the University of Saskatchewan, the DCC hosts a wide variety of exhibits that explore the timeless themes of Diefenbaker’s legacy through a modern perspective. With affordable admission, programming, and guided tours, the DCC creates a welcoming and inclusive environment that bridges the gap between the University of Saskatchewan and the greater Saskatoon community. Originally opened in 1980, the gallery and building underwent significant renovations (funded by the U of S and the federal government) in March 2012, to modernize the spaces. Welcoming well over 10,000 local, national, and international visitors annually, the DCC is a vital part of Saskatoon’s cultural landscape.

The last theme of International Museum Week is . John G. Diefenbaker committed his career to his vision of “One Canada,” where he hoped for a future where all Canadians of all backgrounds could have the same rights and privileges. Diefenbaker’s devotion to universal equality led to historic advancements in representation and political rights for many Canadians.

Diefenbaker translated this commitment into action through a series of historic appointments that expanded representation in Canada's political institutions. He appointed Ellen Fairclough (bottom right) as the first woman to sit on the Canadian Cabinet, and Michael Starr, the first Minister of Ukrainian descent. Diefenbaker additionally appointed James Gladstone (top right) of the Kainai (Blood) Nation as Canadas first Indigenous senate, who two years later moved the Bill through the Senate that gave all Indigenous peoples the right to vote federally.

Diefenbaker's commitment to equality led to one of his proudest achievements: the Canadian Bill of Rights. As the federal government's first attempt to formally protect rights and freedoms at the national level, this revolutionary legislation required all federal laws to respect the rights it guaranteed. The Bill of Rights advanced legal protections for Canadians while also raising national awareness of human rights issues, reinforcing the principle that all citizens should be treated equally under the law. Through this achievement, Diefenbaker left a lasting legacy that helped shape Canada's ongoing commitment to justice, equality, and individual freedoms.

Day 6 of International Museum Week is “Fun in the Museum”, so we are taking you to one of our favourites, the Little Stone Schoolhouse! The LSS, formerly known as the Victoria School, was built by stone mason Alexander Marr in 1887 and was the very first public school of Saskatoon. Once Saskatoon outgrew the one room schoolhouse by 1911, the LSS was deconstructed and rebuilt on the University of Saskatchewan campus where the Diefenbaker Canada Centre maintains and holds educational programming and open houses today!

We inform all of the students who visit the LSS that since it was the first school in Saskatoon, the Little Stone Schoolhouse is a magic school and has the power of time travel. The children then close their eyes and are transported back to 1905 for a lesson from the strict schoolteacher; where they must be on their best behavior as they complete a lesson on the slate boards and pencils at their desks.

The Little Stone Schoolhouse is one our most loved here at the DCC! To experience this historic site for yourself this summer, come visit us at our LSS open house events on June 13th, July 11th, and August 8th. We hope to see you there!
