On this day in 1898, Thomas Holmes was born in Montreal.
He served Canada during the First World War. After he was wounded at Vimy Ridge, he fought at the Battle of Passchendaele where he captured two machine guns. He earned the Victoria Cross for his bravery.

On this day in 1812, the Battle of Queenston Heights was fought.
The British and Canadian troops, and their Mohawk allies, defeated the American invaders. Over 100 soldiers died in the battle, including British Major General Isaac Brock.

Zoo animals live in controlled spaces, so conflicts with people should be judged carefully when a person crosses a barrier, enters a restricted area, or otherwise puts themselves inside an animal’s territory.

An animal reacting defensively is not automatically the same as an animal showing unpredictable aggression, which is why the full circumstances should matter before any life-ending decision is made.

Supporters of stronger protections argue that zoos should focus first on better barriers, staff training, emergency procedures, and expert behavioral assessment instead of automatically blaming the animal.

When a wild animal is simply responding to fear, stress, or intrusion, many people believe euthanasia should be the absolute last resort.
