Did You Know?
In the British Commonwealth, the highest award for outstanding bravery is the Victoria Cross. Today we recognize one of its most remarkable recipients, Private Ernest "Smokey" Smith of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada.

On the night of 21/22 October 1944, at the Savio River in northern Italy, Private Smith's unit crossed the river to establish a bridgehead, only to be counter-attacked by three Mark V Panther tanks, two self-propelled guns, and approximately 30 German infantry soldiers.
With a PIAT anti-tank launcher, Smith engaged the first Panther tank at just 30 feet, hitting it and putting it out of action. Ten German soldiers immediately charged him. Without hesitation, he opened fire, killing four and driving the rest back.

As the attack continued, Smith held his position alone, his comrades wounded or sheltering in a nearby church. He used another PIAT to damage a second tank, forcing it to withdraw. He then carried his wounded comrade to safety and returned to his post to await any further attack.
The official citation records that by the time the enemy withdrew, one tank and both self-propelled guns had been destroyed. Smith was the only Canadian private to ever earn the Victoria Cross.

On this day in 2005, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, Queen of Canada, and His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh visited Alberta to celebrate the province’s centennial.

During their visit from May 23–25, the royal couple made their first stop in Calgary at The Military Museums , formerly known as Museum of the Regiments.

The visit was especially meaningful. Her Majesty had officially opened the museum during her 1990 visit to Calgary. Returning in 2005, she recognized the museum once again during the Year of the Veteran, honouring the service and sacrifices of Canadian veterans.

Today, the royal visits remain an important part of our history and a reminder of the stories we continue to preserve and share.

🏛️ May 18 - International Museum Day
This year's theme is Museums Uniting a Divided World. No institution understands that more deeply than a military museum.

Some of the stories here are not comfortable ones. They are stories of young Canadians who left and never came home. Of courage paid for at an unbearable price. Of a world that learned - through catastrophic loss, what division truly costs.
We exist so that price is never forgotten. Because the greatest tribute we can pay to those who sacrificed everything is to build the world they were fighting for. A world that remembers. A world that chooses peace.

That is why museums matter. That is why we are here.

Join curator Dick Averns for a tour of the exhibitions: David Garneau Dark Chapters and Reading the Ruins.

Dark Chapters, curated by Arin Fay, uses metaphorical still life paintings to share the lived experience of contemporary Indigenous people contending with the legacy of colonialism and institutional containment.
Reading the Ruins, curated by Dick Averns, continues the vein of still life paintings to contemplate current conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine, and the ongoing legacy of the Dark Times that followed the repression of Métis people.
