Our restoration team has been hard at work reassembling one of our newest acquisitions - the Phoenix Fanjet! While the Fanjet was flown to its previous storage hangar under an experimental registration number, it needed to be shipped to us by truck. Many interior and exterior parts needed to be removed during shipping, and our volunteers are hard at work restoring the Phoenix Fanjet to its former glory. We’re so grateful for the expertise that our volunteers bring to the team.

The Sopwith Triplane was a revolutionary aircraft with a short production history that ran from mid-1916 to October 1917. Here are three of the reasons that the Triplane was eventually replaced:

1. It was difficult to repair.
The fuel and oil tanks were inaccessible without dismantling the wings and fuselage and spare parts became difficult to obtain by the summer of 1917.

2. Structural weakness.
The wings of some aircraft were known to have collapsed during steep dives. This was owed to light-gauge bracing wires in aircraft built by subcontractor Clayton & Shuttleworth. Pilots were known to use their own cables or additional wires to strengthen their Triplanes.

3. Light armament.
Contemporary fighters were armed with two guns, but most Triplanes carried only one synchronised Vickers machine gun. Clayton & Shuttleworth produced six experimental Triplanes equipped with twin guns but performance was reduced and the single gun remained standard until the plane was replaced.

As summer comes to a close, so does our Now Boarding: Open Aircraft program. September 7 is the last day for 2026! You've still got time to explore the interior of a plane this summer at The Hangar. Join us on Saturday August 29 for the Beechcraft 18, Sunday August 30 for the Avro Lancaster, Saturday September 5 for the Twin Otter, Sunday September 6 for the DC-3, and the event closes out with one last Lancaster day on Monday September 7.

Closed-toe shoes (no crocs, high heels, sandals or slippers) must be worn for this experience. Gloves and bump-hats will be provided for entry into the Avro Lancaster. Aircraft access ends at 3:30PM, museum access ends at 4:00PM

Hello/Bonjour!

My name is Jordan Strate and I am the new Operations and Memberships Manager here at The Hangar Flight Museum. As Operations and Memberships Manager I am responsible for ensuring high-quality visitor and membership experiences, maintaining the gift shop, and managing weekend operations.

I am born and raised in Calgary and spent much of my life in Victoria, BC, including 5 years in which I did my undergraduate degree in History with a minor in Film Studies. After my BA I was employed for 7 months as a bilingual guide at the Juno Beach Centre in Normandy, France, where I fell in love with every facet of museum work! I’m currently in the process of finishing my Master’s degree at the University of Calgary where I’m researching Canada’s official wartime photographers during the First World War; exploring the effects of composite images on our historical memory of the conflict. I’m beyond excited to bring my passion for history and cultural heritage to The Hangar Flight Museum!

Step back into time and into our De Havilland Twin Otter tomorrow (Saturday August 22) for Now Boarding: Open Aircraft Days!

Our Twin is serial #2 and was first registered in May 25, 1965. Because of its long and outstanding service in the north and exemplary contributions it has made to norther explorations and development and its service in western Canada. The Canadian Cultural Property Board certified this plane as a Canadian cultural property, deemed to be of outstanding significance and national importance.

Ensure you wear safe closed-toe shoes to participate in this special activity!
