Opening 6 September in our gallery in Brussels.

Tinus Vermeersch ’
De Atavisten’
6 September - 24 October

Tinus Vermeersch’s work has its roots in anthropology and in the animistic and folkloric traditions of indigenous societies. His technique, too, reveals a fascination with the past: drawing on an in-depth knowledge of historical materials and traditional craft techniques, he deliberately returns to methods that have fallen out of use.

In this series of oil paintings on panel, Tinus continues to develop the surreal universe that previously took shape in drawings, tempera paintings, sculptures and installations. Certain archetypes, such as the bird-man and the haystack, which had established a recurring presence in this mythical world, seem to recede into the background as this exploration continues.

The floral and plant motifs that claim the foreground are new. As they grow, they take on one another’s characteristics, as well as those of their surroundings. They form clusters in which individual elements merge into a new whole, caught in a continuous cycle of growth and decay.

‘True Romans’, 2005 from Thorsten Brinkmann

This series was created in 2005–06 and was first presented as a photographic series. It belongs to Thorsten Brinkmann’s early bodies of work and marks an important moment in his artistic exploration of the relationship between object and everyday life, between the familiar and the strange.

At the center of the series are small assemblages composed of found everyday objects—items that Brinkmann collects from discarded household waste, flea markets, or his immediate surroundings and transforms into new, unexpected constellations. Through these surprising combinations, the original function of the objects recedes into the background, making way for new meanings, associations, and narratives. The works oscillate between humor, poetry, and absurdity, drawing their impact from the tension between familiarity and estrangement. Characteristic of Brinkmann’s working method is the principle of chance: rather than selecting objects according to a predetermined plan, he encounters them and then playfully explores the possibilities of their appropriation and transformation.
